One of the most conflict-affected counties in South Sudan is Nasir County, which is located in Upper Nile State. Many citizens felt hopeful about the formation of the revitalized government after the 2018 peace agreement helped to build trust between the warring parties. In 2020, following the establishment of the county government, residents started to relocate to Nasir town in an effort to start over. Life in Nasir town was normal up until January 2024, when a large number of people who had voluntarily returned from refugee camps in neighboring countries did so in the hopes of starting over. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, when South Sudan People Defense Force (SSPDF) members who had gone to the bush to gather firewood and met with soldiers were greeted by Army youths from Dhuording Payam. Two youths from the civilian population were instantly killed in the fighting. Two civilians were killed in the SSPDF Ambush Dhuording Payam on August 16, and the county RRC director's office called an immediate meeting with agencies working Nasir County in Mandeng Boma. Marburg Virus outbreak in Ethiopia
Marburg Outbreak in Ethiopia
First Confirmed Marburg in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has confirmed its first-ever outbreak of Marburg virus disease.
The outbreak is located in the south of Ethiopia, in the Omo / Jinka region. 9 confirmed cases have been reported.
Genetic analysis shows that the strain is similar to ones seen in previous East African outbreaks.
How the Virus Spreads
Marburg virus is in the Filoviridae family (same as Ebola).
Natural reservoir: fruit bats.
Human-to-human transmission: via direct contact with body fluids (blood, saliva, vomit, etc.) or contaminated materials (sheets, surfaces).
Symptoms & Severity
Early symptoms: high fever, severe headache, muscle aches, fatigue.
Later: many develop bleeding (hemorrhagic symptoms). Fatality risk: Marburg can be very severe. While there’s no exact rate given for this outbreak, historically Marburg is known to have high death rates in outbreaks.
Treatment: No approved vaccine or specific antiviral. Care is supportive — fluids (oral or IV), treating symptoms can help survival.
Response Measures
Ethiopia Ministry of Health, along with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, is leading the response: isolation of cases, contact tracing, community screening, risk communication.

Risk& Concerns :

Cross-border spread: Because the affected region borders South Sudan, there is concern about the virus spreading. Healthcare system strain: Marburg outbreaks can overwhelm local health systems, especially in resource-limited settings.
Fear and misinformation: As with other hemorrhagic fevers, public fear is a risk — making communication and community trust crucial.
It highlights the ongoing threat of viral hemorrhagic fevers in the region.

Public Health Concern :
1. Surveillance is Key: Health authorities in neighboring countries (like South Sudan) should strengthen cross-border surveillance given the proximity.
2. Rapid Response: Isolation, contact tracing, and community awareness help break transmission chains.
3. Health Worker Protection: Training and PPE are critical, because health workers are at high risk.
4.Laboratory Capacity: Confirmatory testing must be fast — delays can worsen spread.
5.Risk Communication: Clear information reduces panic and encourages early treatment-seeking.
