Paris. Tokyo. New York. Dubai.
But There Is Only ONE Airport on Earth...
Where I Saw People Cry on BOTH Sides of the Wall.
Manila. NAIA.
The Saddest Airport in the World.
And the Happiest.
At the Same Time.
Let me explain what I saw.
Because I think about it every single day.
THE DEPARTURE AREA.
4 AM. Terminal 1.
A mother in a new jacket she will wear...
in a country whose winter she has never felt.
Her whole family came.
ALL of them.
Grandmother. Cousins. Neighbors.
The tricycle driver who drove them โ he stayed too.
In my country, we say goodbye at the door.
"Have a good flight. Text me."
Filipinos?
Filipinos bring the ENTIRE BARANGAY...
to say goodbye to ONE person.
Because that's what you do...
when a piece of your heart is leaving.
And then I saw her hug her son.
Maybe seven years old.
She hugged him like she was trying...
to memorize him with her arms.
Because she was.
The next time she hugs him...
he will be taller.
His voice will be different.
And she will have missed...
every centimeter of it.

She walked through the gate smiling.
SMILING.
Waving. Blowing kisses.
And the moment she turned the corner...
where the family couldn't see her anymore...
she stopped.
And she broke.
I saw it. I was in that line.
And the security guard...
handed her a tissue...
without even looking.
He keeps them in his pocket.
HE KEEPS TISSUES IN HIS POCKET.
Because he sees this every single day.

THE MATH NOBODY TALKS ABOUT.
Do you know what an OFW really is?
An OFW is a person who solves...
the cruelest equation in the world:
"I must leave the people I love...
to give the people I love...
a life."
Read that again.
They don't leave because they want to.
They leave because tuition is real.
Because medicine is real.
Because the roof leaks when it rains.
So they go.
To deserts of 45 degrees.
To ships in frozen oceans.
To hospitals on night shifts.
To houses where they raise...
OTHER PEOPLE'S CHILDREN...
while their own children grow up...
on a phone screen.

THE VIDEO CALLS.
Every OFW knows this ritual.
The 7 PM call. Or 6 AM. Depends on the time zone.
"Kumain ka na?"
Always the first question.
ALWAYS.
Ten thousand kilometers away...
and the first concern is still...
whether you have eaten.

They attend birthdays through a screen.
They watch graduations at 3 AM their time...
in their work uniform...
crying quietly in a bathroom...
so their roommates won't hear.
They sing "happy birthday" over a lagging connection...
three seconds behind everyone else.
Always three seconds behind.
That's the OFW life.
Three seconds behind every family moment.
For YEARS.

THE BALIKBAYAN BOX.
And then. The box.
My friends, the balikbayan box...
deserves a monument in every plaza.
It takes MONTHS to fill.
Every chocolate on sale โ into the box.
Every shampoo, every canned good, every toy...
into the box.
A box that says:
"I couldn't be there.
But I never stopped thinking about you.
Every single day. In every single store."
It's not a box of products.
It's a box of postponed love.
Packed. Taped. Weighed to the exact kilogram.

AND THEN... THE ARRIVAL AREA.
The other side of the wall.
And my God.
If the departure area is the saddest place on Earth...
the arrival area of NAIA...
is the HAPPIEST.
The handmade signs: "WELCOME HOME NANAY!"
The balloons. The whole family AGAIN โ
grandmother, cousins, neighbors, the same tricycle driver.
And then the doors open.
And a woman walks out...
pushing a cart with three balikbayan boxes...
scanning the crowd...
and a seven-year-old โ no.
He's ELEVEN now.
He breaks free from his father's hand...
and RUNS.
And the whole arrival hall...
hundreds of strangers...
all turn to watch.
And everyone smiles.
Because every Filipino in that hall...
has been that child.
Or that mother.
Or is praying to one day be...
on either side of that hug.

So here is what I learned...
at the saddest airport in the world:
Filipinos measure love differently.
Not in words. Not in flowers.
In YEARS.
Years given away in foreign countries.
Birthdays missed. Winters endured. Homesickness swallowed.
So that somewhere in a province...
a child can open a notebook...
go to school...
and one day NOT have to leave.
That's the dream.
That the sacrifice ends with them.

To every OFW reading this...
on a break, in a dorm, on a ship, far from home:
The Philippines doesn't call you "bagong bayani" for nothing.
You are not forgotten.
You are the reason the lights are on back home.
Literally.
And to everyone whose parent was an OFW:
Call them today.
Ask THEM if they have eaten.
It's your turn now.
