What is your backup plan if everything stopped tomorrow?
No electricity. No internet. No client reply. No income.
I am not being dramatic. The Philippine government just declared a National Energy Emergency under Executive Order No. 110, and whether we like it or not, we are going to feel this. Fuel prices, rising bills, tighter budgets. And for us VAs and freelancers, there is no company to absorb the blow for us.
It lands directly on us.
Nobody told us this part when we started. Nobody said that choosing freedom also means choosing full responsibility. No sick leave. No guaranteed paycheck at the end of the month. No boss sending a memo that says everything is going to be okay.
Just us. Our skills. And whatever we managed to save.
So I am asking the question out loud because I think a lot of us are too scared to ask it privately.
What is your backup plan?
Here is mine. And I hope it helps you build yours.
✅ Never depend on one client. When they go quiet, you cannot afford to go broke.
✅ Build an emergency fund right now. Not next month. Now.
✅ Upskill in your slow periods. Idle time is either an investment or a waste. Choose.
✅ Lean on your community. Other VAs are not your competition. They are your lifeline.
✅ Make yourself resilient offline. Not every skill needs perfect WiFi to stay valuable.
The government launched the UPLIFT package for workers, farmers, and small businesses.
We have to build our own UPLIFT.
You did not walk away from a stable job to be fragile. You built this life with your own hands, your own laptop, and your own courage. A crisis does not get to take that from you.
You are not behind. You are not failing. You are being tested. And you are still here, still reading, still thinking about how to move forward. That already says everything about who you are.
Drop a 💙 if this hit home.
And share this with a VA friend who needs to hear it today. Because none of us should be figuring this out alone.
