โœจ Youth, Elders, and Peace Advocates United

In the face of tribal war, our call for peace grows stronger. At the Tribal War and Bodong Conference held yesterday, August 21, 2026 in Bontoc, Mountain Province, MPYA stands shoulder to shoulder with elders and peace advocates, affirming that the path to genuine peace and unity lies in confronting the roots of the problem.

We echo the collective demand: Address the root causes of tribal war. Build inter-tribal unity and peace!

Remember our children, remember our future!

Join MPYA! Let's make a difference, hand-in-hand, with our elders! Message us for more details in how to join our activities!

๐Ÿ“ฃNO TO TRIBAL WAR! ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES OF TRIBAL WAR! BUILD INTER-TRIBAL UNITY AND PEACE!

The Mountain Province Youth Alliance calls for an end to the historical and continuing tribal war between the Betwagan tribe of Mountain Province and the Butbut tribe of Kalinga, as well as to similar conflicts among tribes across the Cordillera.

As Indigenous Peoples, we have a deep and enduring connection to our ancestral lands. Our land is where our lives, cultures, identities are rooted. It is only principally right that we protect our land, rights, and dignity. However, we firmly believe that tribal wars are not the solution to the historical and continuing crisis faced by our communities. It deepens rifts among our communities, destroys relationships, and perpetuates a cycle of retaliation and conflict.

Youth are among those most affected by tribal wars. Instead of growing up in communities where they can freely pursue their education, develop their potential, and build relationships across communities, the youth experience anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. They may become innocent victims of tribal wars or, worst, lose their lives without even knowing or understanding what caused the conflict.

Another sad reality faced by youth of warring tribes is the concealment of their tribal identities not because they are ashamed of who they are, but because doing so becomes a means of protecting themselves from members of rival tribes.

Tribal wars can also shape how young people perceive those from other communities, allowing prejudice and division to be passed from one generation to the next. This poses a serious risk to our communities because it allows the cycle of conflict to continue. Beyond fear and prejudice, the youth also experience disrupted schooling, displacement, and emotional distress.

We deserve homes and communities where we can live without fear. We deserve a future that is genuinely peacefulโ€”one that is not defined by tribal conflict, retaliation, and inherited divisions.

We therefore call for a genuine and immediate ceasefire by all parties. We must uphold our Indigenous values that emphasize the importance of community, solidarity, respect, and the protection of life. Tribal war will not resolve disputes; it will only result in the loss of lives, deepen divisions, and perpetuate the cycle of conflict. We call on our government to meaningfully and comprehensively address the root causes of tribal conflicts, instead of fueling it through problematic land and environmental laws, and manipulating its mediations to push for counter-insurgency agenda.

Most importantly, we should strive for inter-tribal unity towards facing immediate and bigger threats to our ancestral lands and self-determination. We should channel our collective strength against big corporations and government projects that will destroy our rivers, submerge our farmlands, and displace our people, much similar to what our elders did at the time of the Anti-Chico Dams struggle. Together, we can embody this enduring legacy of the Kaigorotan.

TRIBAL WAR, ISARDENG! MASAKBAYAN TI SANGOEN!

We recognize the importance of clinical exposure and the responsibility that comes with being future healthcare professionals. We honor and salute the healthcare workers who continue to serve even during this time of calamity. However, being future nurses should never mean that we are expected to disregard legitimate threats to our safety.

If classes are suspended due to the inclement weather, the safety of student nurses travelling to their clinical areas should also be considered. The risks brought by heavy rainfall, raging wind, flooding, hazardous roads, and transportation disruptions cannot simply be overlooked.

The concerns surrounding student safety are also reflective of the challenges faced by nurses themselves, who often work under hazardous conditions with inadequate or delayed hazard pay and limited safety measures. This boils down to the neoliberal system that exploits healthcare workers even under calamities.

We are taught in university to assess risks, prevent harm, and protect life, and these principles must also apply to our safety amid the harsh weather.

Keep Safe, Kakailian!

With the onslaught of and the Habagat, we join the call for Local Government Units and school administrations to suspend classes and prioritize the safety and welfare of students and employees. Many will be traveling along Halsema Highway, which is currently reported as impassable due to landslides. Others need to attend to their farms and homes, especially with heavy rains expected to continue in the coming days.

We also urge schools and universities to adopt compassionate guidelines for students who may be unable to attend classes because of weather conditions affecting their families, livelihoods, and homes.

A friendly reminder to everyone: keep safe, and let us work together in times of impending disaster.

โœŠTurn Ramblings into Action!

On MPSU Students Voicing Out Valid Concerns Online

A Facebook Group called "Chico River Ramblings" has become an influential platform for students of Mountain Province State University. It is now a battle ground of opinions, grievances, and open letters of the studentry, highly empowered by the anonymity enabled for all who wish to air out their sentiments. In turn, CRR has also become an information center on popular campus issues that need urgent attention. But we must ask ourselves: should we remain merely as anonymous ramblers, or should we act collectively and courageously for quality education and democratic rights?

๐Ÿ’ญThe Recent Ramblings on the Student Council Election

At present, anonymous posts on the absence of an "Abstain" vote on the Student Council Election ballot dominate the group discussion. Some users refer to it as "undemocratic", while some are direct to the point in calling out allegedly incompetent candidates. It is good that students are taking the SCE seriously, and it is good that they are holding high standards for student leaders. However, we warn that calling for an "Abstain" vote is not necessarily the correct position. "Abstain" does not qualify as a "vote against" candidates, as some posts are implying. It is a non-vote, and a non-vote can equate to simply not voting at all. Calling for "abstention" and a voting threshold in the SCE can undermine student representation in the long run. Repressive school administrations can weaponize "Abstain" votes to appoint their selected officers of student councils, or worse, there will be a crisis of student leadership and representation in the absence of a student council due to the said limits.

What we must do is encourage competent, progressive, and uncompromising student leaders. We should hold them accountable, if we see a lacking leadership and transparency. We should demand more, if we feel that what they are doing is less. Most importantly, we should encourage the collective participation of the studentry in ensuring that Student Councils truly represent the interests of their constituents. We should campaign for promising leaders to run for the positions, especially since only a handful of students applied for candidacy.

The student movement throughout history fought for the democratic right to have genuine student elections and institutions, such as student councils and publications. Let us embody this spirit of struggle, and call for reforms that genuinely address our need for a strong student leadership instead of settling for a mere "Abstain."

๐Ÿ’ญOn Ramblings about Student Services and Policies

Apart from the elections, ramblings on basic student services and questionable student policies made their way into the CRR FB Group. We commend students who know that they deserve better. It is not wrong to ask for more, and as a State University, MPSU should be entitled to quality facilities and services.

We have learned that some of the requests channeled through CRR were immediately addressed by the administration, while some remain as ramblings. We believe that these issues can be addressed if real, collective presence will lobby to the administration. This can be done through the Student Council, through student organizations, or even student mobilizations. A Facebook Group can only go so far as exposing some issues, and students can just hope that they will be heard. Moreover, the anonymity offered in the CRR can also be used against students, since university officials can just as easily question identity to dismiss valid concerns.

๐Ÿ“ฃThe real struggle is right within the university. Time to turn our ramblings into action! Get organized and lobby to the administration for services students deserve!
