The HR PI Podcast | Episode 31 - Managers Have Feelings Too

A difficult employment meeting doesn't always need an immediate answer.

Sometimes one of the most useful things a manager can say is:
โ€œI'd like some time to consider what you've said.โ€

Pause. Take a break. Adjourn if you need to. Get advice. Think before you respond.
There are very few prizes for being the fastest person in the room. A considered response is usually better than an emotional one.

Workplace Insights | Induction: It Starts Before Day One

Some of the things I remember most about the best induction I've experienced happened before I'd even started the job.

I'd met the team over lunch. My business cards had been ordered. And when I arrived on day one, my workspace was ready for me.

The message was simple: we've been expecting you, we're organised, and we're pleased you're here.

Good induction is much more than first-day paperwork. It starts before someone arrives, gives people time to absorb what they need to know, checks understanding, and continues well beyond day one.

In my latest Workplace Insights article, I look at some practical ways to make induction more effective - and more memorable.

Workplace Humour | New Employee Induction

Day one.

New workplace. New people. New systems. New policies. New passwords. New expectations.

And you'll remember all of that, right? ๐Ÿ˜„

A good induction doesn't need to teach someone everything on their first day. Give people time to absorb, practice, ask questions - and hear the important messages more than once.

The HR PI Podcast | Episode 31 โ€” Managers Have Feelings Too

Managers have feelings too.

Difficult employment meetings can be uncomfortable for everyone in the room - including the manager leading the process.

You might feel frustrated, nervous, challenged or even angry. That's human. The important thing is making sure your emotions don't start making the decisions for you.

In Episode 31 of The HR PI, I look at practical ways managers can stay steady, fair and professional when an employment meeting gets emotional.

Workplace Insights | Could Your People Name Your Organisationโ€™s Values?

Most organisations have values.

But if you asked your people to name them - without looking them up - could they?
And, perhaps more importantly, could they explain what those values actually look like in everyday behaviour?

Values are most useful when they're more than words on a website or wall. They can help shape how people behave, how leaders make decisions, and what gets recognised or addressed in the workplace.

In my latest Workplace Insights article, I look at how to make organisational values memorable, meaningful and useful in practice.

Workplace Humour | Organisational Values

โ€œWe live our values every day.โ€

Great. What are they? ๐Ÿ˜„

If your people can't remember your organisational values, it's probably going to be difficult for them to put those values into practice.

The HR PI Podcast | Episode 30 โ€” Who Does the Boss Talk To?

Sometimes a senior manager doesn't need someone to make the decision for them.

They need someone independent enough to listen, ask useful questions, offer another perspective - and challenge their thinking when that's needed.

And those conversations don't always fit neatly into an HR box. They might be about leadership, culture, business priorities, relationships, risk - or simply something about running the business that's keeping them awake at night.

Ultimately, the decision is still theirs. Good support doesn't take away a senior manager's authority. It helps them exercise it well.

Workplace Insights | Getting Ready for the Holiday Period

Christmas and New Year might still feel a little way off, but now is a good time to start planning.

Leave requests, holiday rosters, public holidays, payroll arrangements and making sure you've got enough cover can all become much harder to sort out if they're left until December.

A little planning now - and clear communication with your team - can save a lot of last-minute stress later.

If you're unsure about holiday entitlements, public holidays, closedowns, leave arrangements or another employment issue as you plan for the holiday period, feel free to get in touch.

Workplace Humour | People Managers

Managing people can involve a little bit of everything.

Supporting someone, following up on performance, sorting out a conflict, planning ahead... while still getting your own job done. ๐Ÿ˜„

Some days, โ€œand breatheโ€ really does deserve a place on the to-do list.

The HR PI Podcast | Episode 30 โ€” Who Does the Boss Talk To?

Your staff can talk to their manager. Your managers can talk to you.
But who do you talk to?

Being the person everyone else relies on can sometimes be a surprisingly lonely position. And there may be things you simply can't appropriately talk through with your team, your Board or even your partner.

Sometimes what you need is an independent sounding board โ€” someone who can listen, offer another perspective, and tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear.
