I’m hearing first hand from some disappointed candidates about their AI interview experiences. Companies appear to forget that their reputation is at stake throughout the entire recruitment process.

Charlie Maclean is sounding the alarm about companies that post prolifically on sites such as LinkedIn, advertising remote roles with attractive salaries.

We've had some great conversations about the NZTBA CEO opportunity, but I know there are still people in the thoroughbred industry who may be the right fit and haven't seen it yet.

If you have or know someone with a strong understanding of New Zealand's breeding and racing industry and want the chance to lead a small team, this could be worth exploring.

Based in Cambridge, this role offers the opportunity to work closely with breeders, industry leaders, stakeholders and Council while helping shape the future direction of the industry.

Feel free to reach out for a confidential conversation.

Not all applications are created equal. Imagine two candidates.

The first is told about a role by a recruiter or someone at the company. It sounds interesting, so they apply. Their CV is solid, but their application doesn't tell us much about why they want this role or this organisation.

The second candidate may have heard about the role the same way, but they take it a step further. They visit the company website, review their social media posts, look for values and any recent news. When they are really curious, they ask for a copy of the position description. They think about how their experience aligns with the role and explain why they want to be part of that organisation.

Who do you think stands out? We see this with every role we advertise.

As recruiters and employers, we're not expecting applicants to know everything about a business. But we do look for signs that someone has taken the time to understand the opportunity and is genuinely interested in being there.

A few things that can make a difference:

1. Mention what attracted you to the organisation.
2. Show you've researched the role and business.
3. Explain how your skills and experience fit their needs.
4. Tell us why this opportunity is the right next step for you.

AI can help write CVs and cover letters as a starting point, however, genuine interest, curiosity and effort are often what set one candidate apart from another.
