Streets and canals are full of music, dancing, markets, and people celebrating together!

After living here for 8 years, one thing I really appreciate about Dutch culture is the work-life balance: people truly know how to enjoy life, not just work.

As someone working in tech recruitment, I often talk about jobs, CVs, and salaries.
But the Netherlands also offers something just as important:

Here's what helped hundreds of international candidates navigate this process. So let me save you some time.

1๏ธโƒฃ VISA FIRST
The most common route for IT professionals is the Highly Skilled Migrant Visa (kennismigrant). You need a Dutch employer to sponsor you, which is why having the right CV and job search strategy matters so much before you even arrive.

2๏ธโƒฃ YOUR DOCUMENTS NEED TO BE READY BEFORE YOU APPLY
โœ” Valid passport (6+ months)
โœ” Birth certificate (translated + apostille)
โœ” Proof of finances
โœ” Health insurance
โœ” Police clearance (if needed)
Don't underestimate translation time. Some documents take weeks.

3๏ธโƒฃ HOUSING - start early
Amsterdam's rental market is one of the toughest in Europe. Budget around โ‚ฌ1,200โ€“1,800/month for a 1-bedroom in Amsterdam. Use Funda, Pararius, or Kamernet, FB group, but start looking 3 months before your arrival date.

4๏ธโƒฃ REGISTER AT THE GEMEENTE WITHIN 5 DAYS
BSN number: your key to everything: bank account, health insurance, employment contract, school enrollment.
DigiD: create one - your online login to many Dutch government websites

5๏ธโƒฃ HEALTH INSURANCE IS MANDATORY
You must sign up within 4 months of arrival. Monthly cost: around โ‚ฌ130โ€“160. It covers GP visits, hospital care, and medications. Dutch companies usually donโ€™t sponsor it, you buy your own.

6๏ธโƒฃ COST OF LIVING
Budget around โ‚ฌ2,500โ€“3,000/month as a single person in Amsterdam.

7๏ธโƒฃ LEARN BASIC DUTCH

Over time recruiting IT professionals in the Netherlands, Iโ€™ve noticed something interesting that I would like to share, that migh help my followers navigate to the Dutch tech job market better.

Some technically strong developers donโ€™t make it past the 1st interview, and itโ€™s rarely about coding.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ก๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง?

1๏ธโƒฃ ๐ˆ๐ญโ€™๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ.

In many Dutch companies (especially consultancies), hiring decisions go beyond technical ability. Interviewers also look for signals like:

โœ”๏ธClear communication
โœ”๏ธAutonomy and ownership
โœ”๏ธStakeholder/client interaction
โœ”๏ธCultural fit (how you collaborate day-to-day)

If someone writes great code but canโ€™t explain their thinking clearly, it creates risk for the team.

2๏ธโƒฃ๐“๐ก๐ž โ€œ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซโ€.

Many engineers I recruit will eventually:

โœ”๏ธWork directly with clients
โœ”๏ธJoin stakeholder meetings
โœ”๏ธRepresent the company externally

So thereโ€™s often a hidden interview question: โ€œWould I confidently put this person in front of a client?โ€

If the answer is uncertain, even very strong engineers may not move forward.

3๏ธโƒฃ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ

As someone who moved to the Netherlands myself, I often notice patterns among international candidates:

โœ”๏ธOverly formal communication
โœ”๏ธLong explanations, indirect answers
โœ”๏ธAvoiding disagreement
โœ”๏ธNot asking clarifying questions

But Dutch work culture values directness, clarity, and constructive debate.

Itโ€™s less about hierarchy, more about transparency.

4๏ธโƒฃ ๐Œ๐ฒ ๐๐€ ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ

Before moving into tech recruitment, I spent more than 10 years working as a QA engineer. That experience shaped how I evaluate candidates today.

Great engineers often stand out because of:

โœ”๏ธClear explanations or a concrete example (STAR methods)
โœ”๏ธLogical and precise breakdowns
โœ”๏ธConnecting with the interviewer

Unfortunately, many strong developers struggle in interviews not because they lack skills, but because they lack structured communication.
