YOUR TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS.

Some people believe that only permanent workers deserve workplace protection. This is not correct. Temporary and contract workers also need to understand their rights and the protections that may apply to their jobs.

🇳🇬 WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY IN NIGERIA?

Nigeria has laws that regulate employment and working conditions. The Labour Act covers matters such as employment contracts, wages and other conditions of work, although it does not cover every category of worker in the same way. Your rights may depend on your job, your employment agreement and the laws that apply to your situation.

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has also published specific guidelines on contract staffing, outsourcing and non-permanent workers in banks, insurance and financial institutions. This shows that contract and non-permanent employment is a recognised workplace issue that needs proper attention.

🌍 WHAT ABOUT INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS?

The International Labour Organization (ILO) recognises temporary work and agency work as forms of non-standard employment. It explains that these arrangements can create challenges, including job insecurity, problems with access to social protection and difficulties in enjoying workplace rights.

The ILO calls for better protection, fair treatment and decent working conditions for workers, regardless of their employment arrangement.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU AS A WORKER?

If you work on a temporary or contract basis, do not assume that you have no rights. Instead:

1. Understand the terms of your employment.
2. Ask questions about your pay, working hours and other benefits.
3. Keep copies of your employment contract and relevant work documents.
4. Find out which labour laws and protections apply to your job.
5. Seek reliable advice if you believe your rights are being ignored.

Employers and workers should also understand their responsibilities. Knowing your rights can help you ask the right questions, recognise possible unfair treatment and know where to seek help.

At NUBIFIE, we believe that workers’ education is important. Every worker deserves to be informed about their employment conditions and the protections that apply to them.

Let us correct the misconception, spread the right information and promote fair treatment in the workplace.

LET’S CORRECT THE NARRATIVE: UNIONISM IS MORE THAN STRIKES

There is a common misunderstanding that unionism is all about causing strikes. This is not the true picture of what responsible trade unionism represents.

Industrial action is only one tool available in labour relations, and where it becomes necessary, it is guided by applicable laws and procedures.

At its heart, unionism is about dialogue, negotiation, consultation, collective bargaining, workers’ representation and peaceful dispute resolution.

A strong union does not simply create conflict. It seeks solutions, protects workers’ rights and promotes fairness in the workplace.

As NUBIFIE continues to champion the interests and welfare of workers in the banking, insurance and financial institutions sector, we remain committed to constructive engagement and responsible unionism.

Misconception vs FACT: Understanding Union Representation

There is a common misconception that belonging to a union means a worker can never lose their job. In reality, union membership is not a guarantee of permanent employment, nor does it provide immunity from legitimate disciplinary action or redundancy. What it does provide is an organized platform through which workers can have a collective voice and, where applicable, receive representation when workplace issues arise. Being part of a Union is about knowing your rights, be diligent, responsible, trustworthy, and disciplined at your workplace.

Union representation helps workers understand their rights and responsibilities while promoting fairness and proper processes in the workplace. Where applicable, a union can represent workers and help ensure that relevant procedures, collective agreements and applicable labour rights are respected. An informed worker is an empowered worker.

To every professional in the banking, insurance and financial institutions sector, your voice matters. When workers come together in solidarity, they can engage constructively, share knowledge and promote better understanding of workplace rights and responsibilities. You do not have to navigate the world of work alone.

We encourage eligible workers across the financial industry to learn more about NUBIFIE, understand what union membership means, and join the collective effort to promote strength, unity, peace and progress in our workplaces.

Solidarity forever! ✊🏽🤝🏽

UNION AWARENESS: KNOW THE FACTS

Think unions are only for low-level workers? That’s a myth.

Workers at different levels can have shared workplace interests. What matters is whether they fall within the union’s applicable scope or representative arrangement.

For financial workers, knowledge of your rights and collective interests is power. From entry level to senior roles, understanding where you stand helps build a stronger, fairer workplace.

One Union. Every Level. One Stronger Workforce.
