The period of living in Lagos without a car might be one of the defining periods in your life. You would know this especially if you don’t have the money to spend on Uber or Taxify daily. Who would do that when you are going to be stuck in traffic for up to 3 hours to and fro? Okay, some people would; but not me. I stick to danfo, BRT buses, or Okada (motorbikes).

Don’t ask me how the name danfo came to be. I have no idea myself. I just know that danfos are the yellow commercial mini-buses with two black lines on them and arguably the most popular means of transportation in Lagos City.

The bus life in Lagos would teach you persistence, perseverance, tolerance, humility, and above all, give you the hustling spirit. So believe me when I say it is an experience that would mold your life forever. If you are new to Lagos, get out your pen and paper and start jotting.

1. HUSTLE
The first and most important rule of danfo is hustling. You must learn to hustle, especially if you are plying a route with limited buses at rush hour.

2. MOVE WITH CHANGE
To avoid commotion when using danfo, try your best to move with loose change. You would hear most conductors shouting already “ Wole pelu change e” (Enter with your change). Most of them hate the rigorous process of looking for change while some actually have change but like looking for trouble.

Kniffin and his co-authors project that working from home will not only continue for many workers but that “COVID-19 will accelerate trends towards working from home past the immediate impacts of the pandemic.”

This will be driven, in part, as organizations recognize the health risks of open-plan offices. “As we now live and work in globally interdependent communities, infectious disease threats such as COVID-19 need to be recognized as part of the workscape,” write Kniffin et al.

“To continue to reap the benefits from global cooperation, we must find smarter and safer ways of working together.”

The return phase presents an opportunity for companies to rethink the employee experience in ways that respect individual differences—home lives, skills and capabilities, mindsets, personal characteristics, and other factors—while also adapting to rapidly changing circumstances.

The good news is that with advances in listening techniques, behavioral science, advanced analytics, two-way communication channels, and other technologies, leaders can now address employee experience in a more targeted and dynamic way.

While drilling down on which employees need more and varied types of support, they can also tailor actions that create widely shared feelings of well-being and cohesion across the workforce.

29/09/2021

Everyone has a lot on their plate these days, and the only way to stay on top of things is to be able to say no. Unfortunately, that tiny two-letter word tends to be met with a lot of resistance, causing unnecessary friction and added tension. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Getting to no is often a negotiation. It’s a multi-step process of agreement, rather than flat out acceptance. Here’s what you need to do to have your “no” accepted.

Don’t just say no, explain the reason why.

Simply saying no isn’t effective. Explaining your reasoning will give you a much better chance of having your “no” be well-received and agreed upon. You always want to provide a sound reason, not an excuse, as to why you’re saying no. This helps the other person see things from your point of view and respond more rationally rather than reactively.

Be Rational.

Unfortunately, we can’t just say no to all of the things we don’t want to do. When you say no to something or someone, make sure you have a truly valid reason. Saying no too often leads to being labeled as uncooperative, not a team player, or a frustrating employee.

Propose an Alternative.

The easiest way to have your “no” stick is to provide an alternative plan. If you can’t do something on a specific day or time, see if there’s another timeframe.

Your boss is a bully if he does any of the following things:

Impedes your success, Intimidates you, Intrudes on your privacy, Isolates you at work, Questions your adequacy and your commitment, Spreads
rumors about you, Undermines your work, Verbally abuses you.

Here are a few steps for handling the situation in the most effective way possible:

Be confident: Bullying bosses are able to quickly discern whom they can control and manipulate.

Continue to work hard: Do not allow your boss' bullying to derail you at work. For instance, don't spend time talking with other co-workers about what is happening. Instead, focus on continuing to produce high-quality work.

Know when to get outside help: If your boss continues to bully you despite your efforts to address it, contact human resources or your boss's supervisor.

Keep a record of all the bullying incidents including dates, times, and witnesses.

You should also keep all electronic correspondence.
