CLIENT EDUCATION SERIES
DAY 3: PREPARING FOR YOUR STAFF'S RESUMPTION

📌 YOUR STAFF IS COMING! ARE YOU READY?

Finding the right domestic staff is one step. Preparing your home and setting clear expectations is another.

Before your nanny, caregiver, housekeeper, or other domestic staff resumes, here are important things to put in place.

1️⃣ PREPARE THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ensure the necessary tools, equipment, and supplies required for the job are available.

2️⃣ EXPLAIN THE DUTIES CLEARLY
Let your staff understand their responsibilities, daily routines, and priorities from the beginning.

3️⃣ AGREE ON WORKING ARRANGEMENTS
Clarify working hours, rest periods, feeding, accommodation where applicable, and other agreed conditions.

4️⃣ ESTABLISH HOUSE RULES
Explain your household's routines, safety requirements, privacy expectations, and important boundaries.

5️⃣ CREATE ROOM FOR COMMUNICATION
Encourage your staff to ask questions when instructions are unclear. Clear communication helps prevent avoidable misunderstandings.

6️⃣ TREAT YOUR STAFF WITH RESPECT
Professionalism should be mutual. A respectful working environment encourages cooperation and helps build a healthy working relationship.

💡 REMEMBER:
Your staff cannot meet expectations that have not been properly communicated. Give clear instructions, provide the necessary resources, and allow reasonable time to understand your household's routine.

At Peace Caregiver and Nanny Services, Abuja, we believe successful placement goes beyond finding staff. It also involves helping clients understand how to build a productive working relationship with them.

🧹 HOUSEKEEPING TRAINING SERIES

📚 DAY 3: UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOUSEHOLD SURFACES

A professional housekeeper must know the surface they are cleaning before choosing a cleaning method or chemical.

Why? Because the wrong product, tool, or technique can damage expensive household materials, even when the intention is to clean them.

Let's learn! 👇

1️⃣ CERAMIC AND PORCELAIN TILES
Commonly found on floors, walls, and in bathrooms.

✅ Cleaning method: Sweep or vacuum first, then damp-mop with a suitable pH-neutral cleaner.
⚠️ Practical tip: Avoid leaving excessive water on the floor. Remove stubborn dirt with a suitable non-abrasive brush.

2️⃣ MARBLE AND GRANITE
Often used for countertops, floors, and decorative surfaces.

✅ Cleaning method: Use a soft microfibre cloth and a stone-compatible, pH-neutral cleaner.
⚠️ Practical tip: Marble is sensitive to acids. Avoid vinegar, lemon juice, acidic toilet cleaners, and abrasive scouring products. Do not assume every granite finish requires the same treatment.

3️⃣ TERRAZZO FLOORS
Common in many homes and buildings in Nigeria.

✅ Cleaning method: Remove loose dirt, then damp-mop with a suitable neutral cleaner.
⚠️ Practical tip: Avoid harsh acids and abrasive materials that can dull or damage the finish.

4️⃣ WOODEN FLOORS AND FURNITURE
These may have different finishes, including varnish, lacquer, oil, or wax.

✅ Cleaning method: Dust with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, following the manufacturer's instructions.
⚠️ Practical tip: Never flood wooden floors with water. Excess moisture can cause swelling, warping, or damage.

5️⃣ GLASS AND MIRRORS
Found on windows, shower screens, and decorative furniture.

✅ Cleaning method: Use a clean microfibre cloth and a suitable glass cleaner.
⚠️ Practical tip: Spray the cloth rather than directly onto sensitive edges or nearby electrical equipment. Finish with a dry cloth to reduce streaks.

6️⃣ STAINLESS STEEL
Commonly used for sinks, kitchen appliances, and fittings.

✅ Cleaning method: Wipe with a soft cloth and a suitable cleaner, following the grain where visible.
⚠️ Practical tip: Avoid steel wool and harsh abrasives that can scratch the surface.

7️⃣ LEATHER AND UPHOLSTERY
Found on sofas, dining chairs, and other furniture.

✅ Cleaning method: Identify the material first and follow the manufacturer's care instructions. Use an approved cleaner and test it on an inconspicuous area.
⚠️ Practical tip: Do not apply ordinary household chemicals to leather or delicate upholstery without confirming compatibility.

🎓 THE PROFESSIONAL HOUSEKEEPER'S RULE

Before cleaning any surface, ask yourself:

✔️ What material is this?
✔️ What type of finish does it have?
✔️ Which cleaning method is appropriate?
✔️ Which product is safe for it?
✔️ Could my equipment scratch, stain, or damage it?

Remember: A surface can look clean but still be damaged by improper cleaning.

Professional housekeeping is not just about removing dirt. It is about achieving cleanliness while protecting the client's property.

💬 TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE!

You are asked to clean a marble countertop, and someone hands you vinegar to remove a stain.

Would you use it? Why or why not?

Share your answer in the comments. 👇

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP SERIES

SERIES 5: PARENTS & CHILDREN — WHEN YOUR CHILD IS AFRAID TO TALK TO YOU

In an article published by Radio Nigeria Ibadan on 8 April 2024, journalist Olaitan Oye-Adeitan shared the experience of two siblings, identified as David and Ruth, who were afraid of approaching their own father.

They explained that whenever they needed something from him, they would push each other forward. If their father was in his bedroom, they had to gather courage and even make the sign of the cross before knocking.

Imagine being a child and being afraid to approach your own father.

Parents, ask yourselves: Does your child feel safe telling you the truth? When they fail an examination, make a mistake or have a problem, is their first thought to seek your help—or to hide it from you?

Some parents demand honesty but respond with anger. They demand closeness but make their children afraid to speak. Then they wonder why the children tell their friends everything but tell their parents nothing.

Children, your parents may not always understand you, but don't allow hurt to silence you completely. When it is safe, speak honestly about what troubles you and give them a chance to listen and change.

Parents, your child should respect you without being terrified of you.

Don't let fear become the reason your child seeks advice everywhere except at home.

When the family is fine, the community will be better.

🧹 HOUSEKEEPING TRAINING SERIES — DAY 2

📌 TOPIC: HOW TO PREPARE FOR DAILY HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES

A professional housekeeper does not start cleaning randomly. Before picking up a mop or applying a cleaning chemical, there are important steps to follow.

Here is how to prepare for a proper housekeeping session. 👇

1️⃣ CONDUCT A PRE-CLEANING INSPECTION
Walk through the areas you have been assigned to clean. Identify visible dust, stains, spills, clutter and heavily soiled surfaces.

Check for fragile items, electrical equipment and anything that requires special care.

Practical tip: If you notice a liquid spill on the floor, assess it immediately to prevent slipping. If it is an unknown chemical, do not touch it until you know how to handle it safely.

2️⃣ GATHER YOUR CLEANING EQUIPMENT
This is called equipment preparation.

Depending on your assigned tasks, gather:
🧹 Broom and dustpan
🪣 Mop and bucket
🧽 Cleaning cloths and sponges
🧤 Protective gloves
🗑️ Waste bags
🧴 Appropriate cleaning products

Practical tip: Inspect your equipment before use. A dirty mop or cleaning cloth can spread contamination instead of removing it.

3️⃣ SELECT THE CORRECT CLEANING AGENTS
A cleaning agent is a product used to remove dirt, grease, stains or other unwanted substances.

Different surfaces require different products. A cleaner suitable for ceramic tiles may not be safe for marble or natural stone.

Practical tip: Read the product label, check surface compatibility and follow the manufacturer's dilution instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals.

4️⃣ APPLY COLOUR-CODED CLEANING CLOTHS WHERE AVAILABLE
Professional housekeeping may use colour-coded cloths to reduce cross-contamination.

For example, a workplace may assign:
🔴 Red — Toilets and toilet areas.
🟡 Yellow — Bathroom surfaces.
🔵 Blue — General areas and furniture.
🟢 Green — Kitchen or food-preparation areas.

Important: Colour-coding systems vary between workplaces. Always follow the system established by your employer.

5️⃣ REMOVE CLUTTER AND PREPARE THE AREA
Before cleaning, organise movable items safely and clear accessible surfaces.

Do not move valuables, important documents or fragile items without permission.

Practical tip: Ask the client before rearranging personal belongings. Professional housekeeping includes respecting the client's property and preferred arrangement.

6️⃣ PLAN YOUR CLEANING SEQUENCE
Work systematically instead of moving randomly from one task to another.

A common sequence is:

✅ High surfaces before low surfaces.
✅ Cleaner areas before heavily soiled areas.
✅ Dry cleaning before wet cleaning.
✅ Floors last, after dust and debris have been removed from other surfaces.

Bathrooms and other contaminated areas require separate cleaning tools and appropriate hygiene precautions.

7️⃣ CHECK SAFETY BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Put on the required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, when the task calls for it.

Ensure adequate ventilation when using cleaning products, place warning signs around wet floors where appropriate, and keep chemicals away from children and pets.

Never mix bleach with acids, toilet cleaners or ammonia-containing products.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🎓 PROFESSIONAL HOUSEKEEPING LESSON
Preparation saves time, prevents accidents, reduces cross-contamination and protects household surfaces from damage.

A professional housekeeper does not simply ask, "What should I clean?"

They also ask:
• What material am I cleaning?
• Which cleaning method is appropriate?
• Which product is safe for this surface?
• What equipment do I need?
• What safety precautions should I take?

That is the difference between cleaning without a plan and working with professional housekeeping standards.
