What it takes to be a commercial model.
Acting: Commercial models are employed to advertise products or services. This means they are often required to use products/explain services on camera to show potential customers exactly what is being sold and how to use it. To pull this type of work off, models are required to look confident and professional when filmed, thus, acting skills are vital. You do not need to be a trained actor but as a commercial model you need to be ready to take on new acting roles and look professional even if youโre in a situation youโre really not used to. A commercial model who cannot do this does not face good career prospects.
Personality: Commercial models are known for their brilliant personality. Why is this? Because emotion is a massive part of modelling, especially in the commercial sector where models need to be very expressive in order to sell and advertise. One day you might need to be a happy go lucky character in a photo shoot, the next, you may be asked to show an angry, stressed persona. In order to prove yourself as a commercial model, itโs a good idea to have a strong portfolio showing the different sides of your personality and what exactly youโre capable of in front of the camera. (If you donโt have a portfolio yet, send us an application on our website and weโll get back to you with portfolio advice if we see potential in you.)
Versatility: Commercial models engage in all types of work. Some may be used to modelling furniture whilst others may model garden equipment and tools. As youโve probably seen on TV, men, women and children are also employed to model as teachers, doctors or students. You can never be sure of whatโs around the corner as a commercial model so try and be open minded towards any work that is put your way. Practice different facial expressions and personas and ensure that youโre happy to take on all kinds of weird and wonderful roles. Again, a strong portfolio will really work to your advantage. It will prove how versatile you are behind the camera.
Looks: It really does depend on each individual project as to how beautiful, muscular, light, heavy, old or young you need to be to find work as a commercial model. Adult models are generally 5 foot 6 and above but their weight and appearance varies. That said, many commercial models are employed to look like the โidealistic customerโ so if you are carrying out modelling work to appear as on-screen Mum, you will probably be expected to look like a very glamorous Mum. The same goes for men; if you are employed to model as an office worker, you will probably be hired to look like a smart, high-earning office worker.
The most important part that influences your look is your health; all agencies want healthy looking models on their books, so look after your body (donโt smoke or drink, make sure your teeth are in good condition etc) to give yourself the best chance of finding work.
