How did I know that trying to save someone could endanger your life; was when I saw a boy intimidating a sales attendant and I decided to intervene.
That fateful day, I went to get ice cream from a close by eatery with my colleague. On getting to the eatery, the sales attendant informed us that the ice cream was yet to solidify. So we should wait. Just as we were about to sit, a guy came in. He asked for ice cream and the sales attendant told him the same thing. He insisted, as soon as the girl gave it to him, he started shouting and dishing out different orders.
For each order he made, he would threaten the girl, while she was working on what he wanted, he would make another order screaming.
And this threw this lady into a state of panic.
He told the girl he won't pay for the ice cream that it is melting. This was after his first scoop. He told the girl to turn the ice cream back into the ice cream machine. In the midst of the confusion, he asked the lady to calculate. Because he was eating from the order, while still making more orders, the lady was thrown into obvious confusion.
He repeated that he won't pay for the ice cream after taking number two scoop and was about making transfer then I stepped in.
I told him "Gentleman you need to calm down and allow this lady to calculate properly, you are intimidating her. See she has lost composure and with the way you are going,, she would run into shortage. You already took from the ice cream and no way will she turn it back, plus you ate two doughnuts previously while she was trying to pack the other item. Allow her to calculate.
The guy got really mad at me "who you be?" He sized me up and imagined I was married. Na your husband you dey talk to. Call your husband.
I told him to stop treating the young lady anyhow. That her salary is not that much for her to record shortage.
He kept shouting, I will $*$$, I nor normal oooo. I noticed he was not as loud towards me like he was towards the girl.
The Supervisor came out and asked the girl to calculate properly. While others were asking him to calm down. I left with my doughnuts but I understood that standing up for people is a brave thing to do at that moment.
I don't take people who stand up for the disadvantaged for granted. They are doing a good and selfless job.
The smile on her face said it all the next day. She didn't need to say thank you but I was genuinely happy to see her the next day.
But I sha learnt something that day.
