Did you know that a poll from recruitment firm Robert Half found that 90% of executives consider cover letters to be invaluable when assessing candidates?
Cover letters offer you an opportunity to explain challenges, transitions, gaps, interest in a role or company, and many other things that you can’t otherwise explain on your resume.
Researchers at the University of Michigan found that when your resume and cover letter expressed values similar to those of the organization, it made a memorable and favorable impression on the hiring team and you were more likely to get an interview.
Your cover letter must answer two questions.
1. Why this company?
2. Why this role?
Answer those two questions pointing to values you hold in common with the company and you've substantially increased your chances of an interview.
I used the above strategy when writing my husband's cover letter for his number one target company. Within three days he had a call back for an interview (four days later he had an offer).
My tip for today: Brainstorm a list of 10 target companies then answer the question, “Why this company?”
