As an information officer you'll work with electronic information - especially online databases content management systems, open access and digital resources - and traditional library materials.
You're likely to spend a lot of time on managing company information and working with internal and external databases. As well as dealing with enquiries from staff and providing to access to resources, you'll also provide training to staff on how to find, use and store information.
Job titles vary so you need to look beyond the title to the actual work you'd be doing in the role. Job titles can include information adviser, information manager, information scientist and information specialist.
The main responsibilities include
1. Research on all websites which post consultancy jobs for Africa and develop a database of the web addresses
2. Daily identify all consulting’s openings either posted on the web and/or national newspapers and prepare them in defined format for upload to the organization’s portal
3. Develop relationships and create liaisons with organizations both private and public on consultancy jobs openings
4. Assist clients to update their profiles in the platform and maintain their data
5. Elect, manage and distribute information resources in a range of formats
6. Classify, collate, catalogue and store information, usually using special computer applications, for easy access and retrieval
7. create and search databases
8. catalogue and index materials
9. scan and abstract materials
10. conduct information audits
11. develop and manage electronic resources using, for example, online databases and content management systems
12. oversee the development of new information systems
13. write and edit reports, publications and website content
14. develop and manage internal information resources and networks via intranet sites
15. respond to requests and enquiries from staff and external clients
16. run effective enquiry and current awareness or 'alerting' services and develop communications strategies
17. provide user education via leaflets, websites and tours of the library or information room (electronic)
18. publicise and market services, through publicity material, demonstrations, presentations and/or social media
19. provide training and advice to colleagues, and clients, on the use of electronic information services.
