Alek Wek (born 16 April 1977) is a South Sudanese British model who first appeared on the catwalks at the age of 18 in 1995, sparking a career lasting to date. She is from the Dinka ethnic group in South Sudan,[1] but in 1991 she and some family members fled to Britain to escape the civil war in Sudan.[2] She later moved to the United States.

Early life

Wek was born the seventh of nine children in Wau in Sudan (now South Sudan) in 1977. When she was preparing to emigrate from Sudan, her mother picked the date April 16, which occurs in the rainy season during which she was born. She says her name means "Black Spotted Cow".[3] Wek was born to her mother (b. 1946), a housewife, and her father Athian Wek (1933-1985), an education official. Alek Wek has stated that physically, she resembles her father, who also had unusually long limbs. Athian Wek once broken his hip in a bicycle accident; his hip was repaired with metal pins. When the civil war broke out in Wau in 1985, the Wek family had to flee from both rebel and government forces. Long periods of walking caused Athian Wek's hip to get infected, and upon the family's return to Wau, he became paralysed and endured a haemorrhage. He died in hospital in Khartoum.[citation needed]
Early career

Wek was discovered at an outdoor market in London in 1995 in Crystal Palace, London [2] by a Models 1 scout. She first received attention when she appeared in the music video for "GoldenEye" by Tina Turner, in 1995 and from there entered the world of fashion as one of its top models. She was signed to Ford Models in 1996[1] and was also seen in the "Got 'Til It's Gone" music video by Janet Jackson that year. She was named "Model of the Year" in 1997 by MTV.[4] She was the first African model to appear on the cover of Elle, also in 1997.[5]
Advertising and catwalks

Amongst other things she has done advertisements for Issey Miyake, Moschino, Victoria's Secret and make-up company Clinique as well as walked the runway for high-profile fashion designers Shiatzy Chen, John Galliano, Chanel, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Jasper Conran[6] and Ermanno Scervino. In walks for Christian Lacroix, she took the role of the bride on several occasions. In 2002 she made her acting debut in The Four Feathers as Sudanese princess Aquol.[7]

Herb Ritts photographed her for a 1999 calendar in a Joanne Gair body painting that was a highlight of Gair's first retrospective.[8]

Wek has also been a guest on both The Tyra Banks Show, America's Next Top Model and The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.

Wek also designs a range of designer handbags called "Wek 1933", which are available throughout selected Selfridges department stores. The year refers to the year her father was born.[9] Her inspiration for the designs came from the brass-clasp briefcase carried by her father.[10]
Campaigning

Wek is a member of the U.S. Committee for Refugees' Advisory Council[11] and is helping to raise awareness about the situation in Sudan, as well as the plight of refugees worldwide.

She is a missionary for World Vision, an organisation which combats AIDS, an ambassador for Doctors Without Borders in Sudan, and devotes time to UNICEF.[12]

In 2007, she released an autobiography, entitled Alek: From Sudanese Refugee to International Supermodel, documenting her journey from a childhood of poverty in Sudan to the catwalks of Europe.[13]

In 2011, she appeared as a guest judge in the sixteenth cycle of America's Next Top Model.

In July 2012, she will be returning to South Sudan with the UN Refugee Agency to highlight the stories of refugees returning from the north and the massive efforts needed to build and stabilize the country.[14]

In 2012 Alek teamed up with Amarula as the face of their campaign African Originals.

How To Dress For A Modeling Audition

A model’s appearance is everything in the modeling industry! Agents, managers and designers prefer to see a model in his/her most natural state. In other words, what you are and not what you could be.

A clean and moisturized face is a winning look. If you decide to wear makeup make sure your foundation is lightly applied, a bit of mascara and blush and a natural shade of lip gloss only. Remember that the decision makers want to see what you really look like!

Hair should be worn down and in its natural state. Whether your hair is curly or straight make sure you don’t have any frizz. Remember to keep your hair off your face during the audition.

Clothing must be simple, clean and form fitting. Don’t wear anything distracting because you want all eyes on you and not your outfit. Jeans – fitted or skinny and in dark denim is best. A simple top –tank top or simple tee or a fitted white shirt is best. Please, no cleavage! Black stilettos will give you extra height and make your legs look longer.

Jewelry should be kept at a serious minimum. Stud earrings and a watch will be the most you will want to wear. Again, remember that you don’t want your jewelry to distract from YOU!

Get a good night’s rest and wrap everything up with a smile, confidence and excellent body language and you’ll be set for a successful audition experience

Model Photo Shoots

The different kinds of photo shoots for a model and what they involve

If you are aiming to become a professional model who wants to work in front of a camera, there are a few things you should know in order to perform to the best of your ability and to prosper in your career as a model.

Test shoots

Test shoots usually refer to the practice of a photographer wanting to try out a creative idea, test new equipment, wanting to build their own portfolio, or the photographer might just want try out how a photo shoot would go with the set-up of the photo session. The other side of test shoots is for models who need test shots for their portfolios. This can be organised by the model themselves so they can get professional shots to show to agencies, or by an agency who wants to represent a new model.

Test shoots are usually a simple trade of services. Do not expect to get paid for a test shoot, just as a photographer will not expect a reward for the photography he/she does. So you could view it as friendly set-up of one professional helping another, which works both ways.

Model photo shoots

There are some basic points which you should aim to fulfill as a model, in terms of photo shoots and photo sessions.

Firstly, you should know how to make the photographer’s life as easy as possible. A model, who knows what he/she is doing and who does not need so much managing, will definitely take a nice stand with the photographer. If you show flexibility and you can adapt to the setting easily, this will make the photographer feel much more at ease, and will consequently allow for the photo shoot to go according to plan without delays or disruption.

The second, very important thing to remember is to keep yourself healthy and energetic. You should never arrive to a photo shoot looking tired and exhausted as this will have an effect on the photo shoot in a variety of ways. So remember to always get a good night’s sleep before the photo shoot and come to the shoot with energy and eagerness to work hard, as expected.

Thirdly, when you have a photo shoot scheduled, always come well prepared. Usually all details relating to a photo shoot are discussed and set beforehand, therefore coming to a shoot with all the necessary items is vital. This is a good representation of your own reliability, so in order to appear as professional as possible, make sure you come fully prepared.

In addition to the latter, always make sure you arrive on time. Nobody appreciates waiting around, especially as Studio time is often based on hourly fees. So it’s always better to come early rather than late.

When all the preparations have been made for the shoot, then starts your one-on-one with the photographer. Your ability to communicate with the photographer is key as it sets the tone and speed of the shoot. So listen to the instructions of the photographer carefully and try to make his/ her job as easy as possible. Naturally, the more a model and a photographer work together, the smoother the photo shoot, but whether it’s your first or your tenth time working together, you should always aim to ask the photographer what he or she wants in order to facilitate for the most effective working environment.
