LATUYA’s TOBONG’U LOTAL, A CALL TO PRESERVING YOUR ROOTS.

The Turkana community in Rumuruti, Laikipia County, came together on 10th October 2026, for a colourful cultural celebration that brought communities together in a powerful display of unity, heritage and cultural pride.
Organised by the Laikipia Turkana YouthAssociation team, the festival attracted members of the Turkana community, alongside other communities living in Laikipia and the neighbouring counties. The event left a lasting impression on attendees, with its rich cultural displays and vibrant atmosphere earning it recognition as an important platform for celebrating identity and strengthening community bonds.
Performances by various artists such as Adymika Pro Melo Soila Logetei Sonny Bwoy Masound Naukery Music Imosh Vinady Mr Nare, among others, including the home musicians, comedian Apalotop, kept the crowd entertained, with music, dance and cultural expressions reflecting the richness of Turkana heritage.
During the closing remarks and votes of thanks, led by Ekhomol Brian and the chairman, Josphat Ekiru ,the LATUYA team expressed gratitude to everyone who attended, participated in and supported the festival in various ways. They also highlighted that the festival is meant to urge the community to preserve their culture, that’s why they called it, Tobong’u Lotal.
As the Swahili saying goes, “Mwacha mila ni mtumwa”, a person who abandons their culture becomes enslaved. The message remains particularly relevant in a rapidly changing world where cultural preservation requires deliberate efforts from communities, leaders and the younger generation.
The festival’s theme echoes similar cultural movements within the region. In Turkana County, the phrase Tobong Loree represents a return to one's original place, while among the Turkana community living in Samburu, Tobong Nawi conveys the message of going back home.
The team acknowledged the collective effort that made the event possible, recognising that the success of such initiatives depends on the commitment and cooperation of the community.
Their message to the wider Ateker community was clear: unity is essential to preserving culture, strengthening identity and creating opportunities for future generations.
Beyond celebrating traditions, such gatherings provide opportunities for artists, cultural practitioners, organisers and young people to collaborate, showcase their talents and build networks across communities and geographical boundaries.
