WE at RPG

WE at RPG The “WE@RPG” women’s network has also provided a common platform for women across all companie The COE consists of representatives from all group companies.

In today’s day and age, diversity and inclusion has become a priority for India Inc, showing innumerable benefits and results for many organisations. With RPG’s already diverse and global workforce of over 21000 employees, we believe a Centre of Excellence (CoE) approach is the right way to manage this talent pool. This thought lead to the inception of the Diversity and Inclusion CoE—a body workin

g towards creating an inclusive workforce which fosters diverse thoughts, cultures, age, gender. The current focus for the D&I CoE is to bring a balance in the workforce by having equal gender split, with an aim to create an inclusive environment and foster the growth of women employees in the organization. The goal is that at least 25% of the workforce should be women and 20% women leaders at VP+ grades by 2021. To achieve this targets, the D&I CoE has introduced a framework called ADMIRE which will aim at acquiring, developing, motivating, involving, retaining and empowering the women workforce.

In today's Lead a column that showcases the journey of the senior women leaders across RPG group companies, we present Pali Tripathi from CEAT, Mumbai. Pali is Head Strategy and a leader who lives life to the utmost. She has immense self-belief and has a strong faith in the power of opportunities.
A travel enthusiast and a blogger, she has worn many hats in her professional career and is proud about the fact that she made the most of every opportunity that life offered her. We quote her here.....

"Leadership is a mindset. Not everyone may want to or should have it, but everyone with this mindset can. If you have a compelling vision and you can enable a relevant set of people to be a part of this vision, then you are a leader.

I graduated in Psychology to have this as an elective for my UPSC mains, I instead did my MBA in HR because that seemed more interesting at that point, joined the HR function but ended up doing sales transformation and later everything under the (very) broad umbrella of strategy. In a nutshell, my career has been about grabbing opportunities in a given context and willingness to acknowledge that, the more experiences you have, the wiser you become about what you intrinsically like and are good at. I believe that I have been a manager and a leader based on the requirements of a context – both are needed and continue to be needed whatever your role or hierarchy.

I strongly believe in informal and everyday mentoring and sponsorship and this is something I have been practicing for the last 5-6 years. I have greatly benefited from mentors across organizations and walks of life, who have been a phone call away whenever I have needed them – whether it’s a career choice or something personal. Now, I try and do the same thing – I ensure I am available to people who may need me and I take up their ‘cause’ , in every forum I can.

Say a loud, unequivocal, confident ‘Yes’ when an opportunity presents itself– don’t overthink it, you will figure out the rest later (if you want it enough)."

Under Lead a column that showcases the journey of the senior women leaders across RPG group companies, we present Avni Gandhi, General Manager, International Taxation, KEC today. Her 17 years career is a bag full of ups and downs, yet a one which has been extremely fulfilling and enriching. And we quote her here...

"I define myself as an agile, hardworking professional and constantly being on-toes’ mother trying to achieve perfect balance between work and home.

I started my journey back in 2001 with a position of ‘Tax Assistant’ in an advisory firm A.F. Ferguson (now merged with Deloitte). My career experience spans over 17 years of association with consulting firms AFF and KPMG and then, MNC banks Standard Chartered Bank India and Deutsche Bank India. All throughout, I have been working as a Tax professional with focus on direct and international taxation.

The transformation from a manager to a leader is a journey which happens gradually and not overnight. Personally, for me the self-belief and confidence strengthened during my association with Standard Chartered Bank, when my seniors had shown faith in me by giving an opportunity to interact with higher Management independent is an attitude, an attitude which showcases your personality, your behavior, your approach to others, how your treat people and which in turn defines your success. Position to me is a title and an authority assigned to you in a particular set-up / job. In corporate world, position and attitude should complement each other.

I believe that leadership is a responsibility. Responsibility to make the first move, to make the effort to make the team comfortable and create an environment of openness and mutual co-operation. And when you as a leader can give this to your team, team obviously responds positively by putting in their best.

It’s been 10 months in RPG Group and I am extremely lucky that I have got the role and the work which I am passionate about and I love doing my daily chores. And when you do what you love to do, you find a way to balance everything else. I am also lucky to have extremely supportive family. They have stood with me throughout my life and no words can express my gratitude for them.

Be positive! We the women have the natural ability to work in any situation. So just use your instinct, work hard and unleash your talent"....Avni Gandhi

Don't miss this fantastic piece from Richa Sankpal, our woman leader from Zensar Technologies. her thoughts on empowerment will surely leave you inspire.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I want you to feel empowered.

Glass ceilings exist, and so do men and women who champion for promising female employees. But is that it? I have always felt, there is something else, something different – that can be a Game Changer in how a woman sees herself in the Organization. But I was unable to put my finger on that elusive ‘something’.

In the Indian context, if you are a woman desirous of climbing up the corporate ladder, you receive one piece of advice repeatedly – ‘Prepare to fight’. It’s not even a bad piece of advice; quite practical and quite relevant. And yet – there had to be something else, something different – something that makes a change in ‘who you are’; not ‘what you do’. But I was never able to quite articulate what that was.

I looked expectantly at senior women managers to point out what that could be. While some were examples in themselves, and some provided ceiling smashing opportunities to women of caliber – that soft little detail eluded me. As a leader myself, I have tried to encourage girls to come forward... take up opportunities… and yet I felt I fell short of giving them the confidence they needed. Until I found it – one week ago – in South Africa.

An Onsite deployment brought me to a customer in South Africa; and the Manager happened to be a woman. In my informal induction while she explained the contribution she expected from me, she said, “I want you to feel empowered”.

6.simple.words.

And they gave me wings!

I’m sure many a Women Empowerment Forum has spoken something similar. But if a Women’s Forum tells me to feel empowered – that’s just good advice, right? They speak, I hear; we all go home! They’re not going to fight the good fight with me! But my manager – that’s a whole different story. When she tells me to do something – she commits to it as much as I do. She’s got my back! And that makes a world of difference – it gives conviction to words. That sentence is an action in itself.

When a Women’s Forum tells you to feel empowered – it feels like something selfish you are doing for yourself. Here’s an article that partly explains why! “Good girls are not demanding”, “Good girls adjust”, “Good girls are not opinionated” – and guess what – the learning becomes a part of one’s psyche! So that we think not twice but 4 times before asking for anything for ourselves. But here was my leader asking me to go right after what I need. It wasn’t ‘bother’ but a step forward in our collective effort.
She wanted me to ask what I wanted; to be vocal about my needs; that was an expectation of me! Which meant - this was a good thing! What a validation!

And when a female leader says this to you, you know there is an empathy that brings forward those words. Hearing those words finally makes me realize what I want to say to newer generations; this experience makes me see what I want to do.

Here comes another WE Star Prasoona Lanka who has a wonderful musing to share with all. She is a part of our group company Zensar and is based out of Bangalore. The talent of our women workforce is extraordinary. Saluting Prasoona here.

“Many times people feel spirituality is an after-retirement subject. I think it refines the thought process of an individual, and helps any individual of any age group in the self-growth even in today’s complex society. I think Karma Yoga is neither positive thinking nor negative thinking, but it’s the factual thinking and reap to the best when done with Bhakti. My journey lead me learning a drop from an ocean, I which would like to share with all of you :)''...Prasoona Lanka

Title: Advaita Musings

You never accept my existence
I was with you since this implement arrived
I was with you in all your struggles
I was with you in all your merry

You never accept my existence
You are an ocean of desires
sometimes you call it devotion
sometimes you call it contentment
whatever you call these are causes
for the growing distance between you and me

I am everything that you never realize
the moment you embrace me
can wipe off the dirt on the mirror
I persuade, I knock your door
you never accept my existence

Let me add small words to your colossal dictionary
Detachment, Dharma, Duties and Delusion
watch the water drop on leaf
accept please my very existence.

Here comes our WEStar, Shivi Khandelwal who shares her joyous journey with paintings and sketches. Shivi is a part of KEC and is based out of Mumbai. And we quote her here…

"Beauty of colors inspire me. The kind of shades I mix and use is directly connected with the state of mind I am in. I have never learnt it professionally. But I keep exploring internet to learn various techniques. I have been sketching since I was a small kid. Painting is a new love. I started painting some 2 years back. Currently I’m just learning and trying to make better every time I paint. But, I wish to put up an exhibition in the future. :)…"

Presenting which showcases some fabulous thoughts of the senior women leaders across RPG group. Here we present Nikita Singhvi, Senior Manager with KEC. Quoting some of her inspiring views when we quizzed her on leadership, her journey, her hobbies and more.

"I take pride in being myself, I am comfortable with who I am.

To me, Leadership is about motivation, mentorship and walking the talk, it’s an attitude and not a position. I completely believe in this quote by Jack Welch - 'Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.'

I have had an experience of working with a few leading Engineering MNCs before taking up my current assignment. I managed and led mid-size teams, where I was appreciated for my conduct as a leader by colleagues and clients. So, I do not think there was a specific moment of realization which made me incline towards leadership, I always felt it , but I think my decision of doing an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad definitely gave me a way forward.

I believe that the traits of being a successful leader are not gender specific, but the tricky part for a woman leader is to be able to highlight those qualities. Some of the qualities that have been my key strengths are - Persistence, an optimistic attitude, passion, self-confidence & a strong support system.

I feel traditional leadership was defined as someone being powerful, aggressive and assertive. However with time leadership has become a collaborative effort and now a leader is supposed to be an enabler, a good listener, a motivator, an empathizer. Thus, leadership itself is moving towards encouraging the softer qualities of a person, so a woman leader should all the more embrace these traits to bring about the difference in these transitional times.

I have a lot of hobbies that I try pursuing in my free time. However, to name one, I love experimenting with my cooking and watch a lot of cookery videos.
