De Taali

De Taali The hijra community one of the most marginalized groups in Indian society in spite of them contributing to a large chunk of the population.

Estimates peg the hijra population in 7 major states of India at 1.4 million. However, various problems plague them on a regular basis.

• Lack of employment opportunities thus reducing their job description to three main categories- begging, prostitution and performing in marriage and child-birth ceremonies.

• Lack of educational and health facilities.

• Violence and discrimination.

• Inabilit

y to exercise political rights. A campaign by mass media students of Wilson College, 'De Taali' strives to remove this very stigma on the hijra community. We seek to promote sensitivity among the general populace and inculcate them in the mainstream. Email us: [email protected]

De Taali wishes to thank every single person in the audience for making The De Taali Gig such a grand success. We wish to thank Agnee, Gaurav Dagaonkar, Indian Beaters, Avinash Tewari, Sharvari Deshpande and the amazing group of transgender performers 'Kinnar Kasturi' for putting up a show that brimmed with entertainment and sensitivity. And of course, Harrish Iyer and Raghu was addressing the crowd about the gravity of the issue.
It wouldn't have been the same without you all.
