"The Operating Suites" from conceptualization to completion

About one month before the iMISC, Philip, Enders, Randolph and I decided to create a painting together on Minimally Invasive Surgery which was not only the theme of the conference, but also has made our careers in our respective subspecialties. We came up with the idea of introducing the Operating Suites to the viewers. Although the centre of the painting consists of two people scrubbing in front of the mirror (which a layman can easily relate to and is non-disturbing in nature), the main focus resides in the two operating rooms from reflections in the mirror.

This painting is unique in several aspects. It is a collective work by four senior surgeons using innovative, multimedia to bring viewers into the operating suites to take a glimpse of surgeons in action. We hope this work will stand to symbolize innovation and collegiality for the present and future generations of surgeons.

Great news! The second solo public exhibition of Dr. Yim’s artwork is going to take place at Tsi Ku Chai Gallery (2/F & 3/F), 9 Queen Victoria St, Central from 30 Jun - 5 Jul 2019. As usual, Dr. Yim continues to explore a variety of creative multimedia in delivering his unique artistic language, which is perfectly embedded in the upcoming exhibited artworks. A limited number of Dr. Yim’s art albums “My second career: a collection of artwork” published by AME will also be available for sale during the exhibition period.

Reaching another milestone in career, Prof. Anthony Yim was presented an Honorary Fellowship from the Philippines Association of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgeons (PAMITS) at a reception ceremony on 19 February, 2019 held at the Conference Hall, International Medical Centre, Hong Kong.

In celebration of this special occasion, a number of PAMITS delegations from the Philippines and former students and mentees of Prof. Yim all flocked together on purpose to express their gratitude to Prof. Yim for his immense contribution in the field of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and his continuous guidance and education in the VATS technique. One by one, they shared their unique stories with Prof. Yim and sincerely thanked him for not only bestowing the skills upon them, but the life lessons from him that helped them grow as a person.

Witnessed by all participants, Prof. Yim vowed to fully commit himself to promote the values of PAMITS, to advocate knowledge, expertise and resources that he has gained to other members, to train fellows of the association and to treat patients regardless of their social status and capability.

The banquet following the ceremony was filled with a dynamic vibe given by a series of Prof. Yim’s recent works hanging all around the dining room. Once again, Prof. Yim used action to tell us that no matter what we pursue in life, we have to live with a passion, as what he said, “If you think you are doing the right thing, don’t care too much about the criticisms. Art is more for oneself rather than for viewers. If people appreciate your work, it’d be a bonus. The primary goal is to rediscover oneself.”

Dr. Yim's art album was well-received by worldwide experts at Asia Thoracic Cancer Care Summit 2018, Hong Kong and 26th European Conference on General Thoracic Surgery, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

They gave the warmest support to Dr. Yim in the pursuit of his second career and looked forward to seeing more outstanding artworks from him.
