💥Friday Weekly Wrap-Up 💥, where we explore the intersection of Art, Fashion and Pop Culture.
1. Eyes Gone Wild
The city council of Bend, Oregon, has had enough of the googly-eyed makeover spree hitting its sculptures! From a statue of two deer to a metal sphere, no artwork has been spared. While the quirky additions might spark a chuckle, the council isn’t laughing—it’s already spent $1,500 carefully removing the eyes from seven of eight affected pieces. In a social media plea, they urged the culprit to quit the googly antics, reminding everyone that preserving public art isn’t cheap!
2. Turns 25 With Walk Down Memory Lane
To celebrate its 25th anniversary in May 2025, Tate Modern is pulling out all the stops with a free public showcase from May 9–12, featuring 25 iconic works scattered across the museum. Highlights include the dramatic return of Louise Bourgeois’s Maman—the towering 10-meter spider sculpture that first graced the Turbine Hall in 2000—and a selection of Mark Rothko’s powerful pieces.
3. Pompidou Pause: Last Call for a Parisian Icon!
The iconic in Paris is set to close its doors in summer 2025 for a massive five-year makeover, reopening in 2030 with a fresh new look and improved safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency. While the museum and library close as early as March 2025, the collection will hit the road, popping up in cultural hotspots like the Louvre, Grand Palais, and museums worldwide. Don’t miss your chance to soak in the magic of this art haven before the curtains fall!
4. AI’s Big Auction Debut
AI has officially entered the auction world chat, helping authenticate works by Louise Bourgeois, Marianne von Werefkin, and Mimmo Paladino at Germann Auction House in Zurich. In partnership with Swiss AI company Art Recognition, their founder Carina Popovici called it a pivotal moment where AI directly influenced market transactions. While some view it as a game-changer, the big question remains: will blue-chip auction houses embrace this digital revolution?
Hugs and stay sane 🫶
