⚖️ “Theft” or misunderstanding?
A Boohoo worker was unfairly dismissed for taking packets of Mentos gum 😛

He thought they were “for everyone to share” - and it turns out, they were! Other staff (including managers) were chewing the same gum 🍬

Yet he was sacked for gross misconduct without notice or pay

The tribunal ruled Boohoo’s handling was outside the range of reasonable responses, after:
🔹 Failing to review CCTV
🔹 Ignoring evidence of others doing the same
🔹 Running a “closed-minded” appeal

Employer lessons:
✅ Clearly communicate what’s misconduct
✅ Keep investigations fair & consistent
✅ Approach appeals with an open mind
✅ Apply standards equally - no exceptions

A chef with dyslexia 👨‍🍳 has won his case against pub chain Greene King after being dismissed for struggling to read customer orders

He’d asked for a simple, low-cost adjustment - a Bluetooth earpiece 🔊 to read orders aloud, but his employer failed to act!

The tribunal ruled this was disability discrimination, awarding £24,000 in damages

What employers can learn....
✅ Know your duty under the Equality Act 2010
✅ Talk to employees and act early
✅ Tailor adjustments to individual needs
✅ Train managers to spot and respond to issues

Big changes are on the horizon for UK employers….

The Employment Rights Bill is now in its final “ping pong” 🏓 stage between the Commons and the Lords - and it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest shake-ups in employment law in a generation

What’s on the table....
⚖️ Day-one employment rights
📅 New probation period rules
💬 Zero-hours contracts
💔 Bereavement leave & “fire and rehire” consultations

But….Parliament’s still debating key points, so Royal Assent may take longer than planned. Once it’s approved, a wave of new consultations and updates will follow - with some changes expected to start from April 2026

🚨 £30K payout… for working from home to let the gardeners in?! 🌿💻

That’s what happened when a tribunal found an employer seriously overreacted 🤦‍♀️

One WFH request snowballed into accusations, bias and a resignation - ending in constructive unfair dismissal and a £30K award 💰💰💰💰

✨ Lesson? A little flexibility (and fairness) goes a long way

🔦 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕

The Co-op was ordered to pay £8.5k+ 💷 after a worker accused of making “Michael Jackson noises” 🎤 was found to be unfairly dismissed

⚖️ The tribunal said his behaviour was “juvenile” - BUT the dismissal was unfair because:
👉 No clear policy shared
👉 No prior warnings
👉 No fair investigation

🗝️ Lesson for business owners:
Unacceptable behaviour still needs proper process. Skip it = costly tribunal ⚖️

Protect your business:
✅ Clear policies
✅ Train managers
✅ Fair investigations
