“Health and safety has gone too far.” - We’ve all heard it.

But perhaps the better question is: have we forgotten how far we’ve come? Construction has made enormous progress in the way risk is planned, managed and communicated. Yet the job isn’t finished.

The answer isn’t more paperwork for the sake of paperwork.

✅ Better leadership
✅ Better planning
✅ Meaningful risk assessments
✅ People confident enough to speak up
✅ Safety considered from day one

Has health and safety gone too far, or has the industry simply raised its standards?

The Design Responsibility Matrix: useful tool or false sense of security?

A Design Responsibility Matrix can tell you who owns each design package.
But it cannot guarantee that those packages work together.

This is where the Building Regulations Principal Designer adds real value: Understanding interfaces, challenging gaps and connecting the right people and information. Every significant package should answer two questions:

Who is responsible for designing it?
What other designs does it interface with?

Use the matrix. Keep it current. But do not confuse allocated responsibility with coordinated responsibility.

Are we managing the matrix or are we managing the building?

This World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that good health and safety includes psychological wellbeing!

Listening without judgement, encouraging open conversations and acting on what we hear, we can help create healthier, safer workplaces. Wellbeing should be part of everyday workplace culture, not simply a conversation for one day.

Does your business have a clear drugs and alcohol policy in place?

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has published a free drugs and alcohol policy template, providing a useful starting point for organisations that do not currently have one or want to review their existing arrangements. Clear policies help employees understand expectations, support consistent decision-making and contribute to safer, healthier workplaces.

A great industry resource from CIOB and everyone involved in its development.
Download the free template here:

Every organisation is different, so the template should be reviewed and adapted to reflect your activities, risks and existing procedures.

The template has been created by members of CIOB’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisory Panel

Proposed RIDDOR changes: is your reporting process ready?

The Health and Safety Executive has consulted on proposed updates to RIDDOR, including changes to reportable occupational diseases, dangerous occurrences and the reporting process.

While these proposals are not yet confirmed requirements, they provide a useful prompt for businesses to review how incidents and occupational health concerns are currently identified, recorded and escalated.

A good place to start is by asking:

✅ Are reporting responsibilities clearly understood?
✅ Are occupational health concerns being recognised early?
✅ Are records complete, consistent and easy to access?
✅ Do managers know when specialist advice is needed?

📈 The September Surge is here. Are your safety systems ready?

As projects restart, teams return and workloads begin to build, autumn is a useful time to pause and review your health and safety arrangements.

A proactive check can help identify gaps, clarify priorities and make sure your systems continue to support the way your business operates.

When did you last review your health and safety arrangements?
