Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) impact far more pupils than many people realise, and often present as disengagement, behaviour challenges, low confidence, or difficulty accessing learning.

Simple classroom strategies can make a huge difference, including:
• Breaking instructions into smaller steps
• Using visuals alongside verbal explanations
• Allowing extra processing time
• Checking understanding effectively

As SEND needs continue to rise across schools, confidence in supporting communication needs is becoming essential for all educators, not just SEND specialists.

We’ve explored this further in our latest blog, alongside details of our new SLCN CPD pathway available to cleared and onboarding Supply Desk educators.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a timely reminder that educators spend so much of their time supporting the wellbeing of others, often while putting their own mental health to one side.

Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. The pressure of workload, behaviour challenges, supporting pupils with complex needs, inspections, planning, marking, and simply always being “on” can take its toll.

At Supply Desk, we believe supporting educators means more than just finding the right role.

That’s why all of our cleared and onboarding candidates have free access to our CPD Hub, including dedicated training in Resilience for Educators and Wellbeing for Educators

We’re also continuing that support with a free wellbeing webinar next month, designed specifically to help educators prioritise and protect their mental health.

If you work in education, this is your reminder: looking after yourself is not optional, it’s essential.

Because when educators are supported, everyone benefits 💚

Wishing the very best of luck to all students beginning their Level 3 exams and assessments this week.

From A-Levels to vocational and technical qualifications, students across the country are preparing to showcase the hard work they’ve put in throughout the year.

We know exam season can be challenging, so remember to look after yourselves, take breaks where needed, and give yourself credit for how far you’ve already come.

Good luck from all of us at Supply Desk 💙

SLCN CPD: Series 1 is now available to Supply Desk educators as part of our new SLCN CPD pathway 💻

Available to both cleared candidates and those currently undergoing clearance, this first module is designed to give educators practical, classroom-ready strategies to better support pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

You’ll explore:
• Adapting language and simplifying instructions
• Checking understanding effectively
• Using visual and structured supports to improve access to learning

The course is designed to help educators respond confidently to a wide range of communication needs across the classroom.

Strong communication is essential for learning, behaviour, and engagement, and every teacher and support staff member has a role in helping pupils access it.

This forms part of the wider Supply Desk CPD Hub, created to support inclusive, high-quality practice across all education settings.

📩 Eligible educators will receive access details directly by email.
