Kia Whyte, an occupational therapist at the Northern Care Alliance is celebrating qualifying through the apprenticeship route after a journey that began as an NHS cadet in college.

Inspired after shadowing an occupational therapist on an orthopaedic ward, Kia was drawn to the variety of the role and the impact occupational therapy could have on patients’ lives. After working in a care home, Kia later secured a role as an occupational therapy assistant within an acute medical ward, it was there she saw first-hand the difference occupational therapy can make to people during difficult periods in their lives.

Wanting to develop further within rehabilitation, she joined the Floyd Neurorehabilitation Unit in Rochdale as a rehabilitation support worker before applying for the occupational therapy apprenticeship programme.

The NCA offers a range of apprenticeships in a variety of roles, including nursing, therapy, administration and IT. In 2022, the Trust became one of the first NHS providers in the northwest to support a degree apprenticeship in occupational therapy, providing routes for experienced therapy assistants to advance their careers as a registered healthcare practitioner.

Reflecting on her journey, Kia said: “the apprenticeship opened so many doors for me. I was able to continue working within the team and speciality I loved while developing my skills and knowledge. The support from the team throughout my training was incredible.”

Now qualified, Kia is continuing her career within neurorehabilitation and encouraging others to consider the apprenticeship route and says “my journey has been challenging at times, but seeing what you learn in lectures translate into real-life practice makes it so worthwhile, extremely rewarding and worth every second.”

Diane Hooper, Allied Health Professions Resourcing Lead said “The Occupational Therapy (OT) degree apprenticeship enables experienced therapy assistants to earn an OT degree, gain HCPC registration, and combine academic study with hands on practice. Apprentices help tackle workforce shortages in accordance with business need, bringing new knowledge and immediate benefits to services. The programme is funded through the NCA apprenticeship levy, however no backfill is provided, managers must plan for potential service gaps and the apprentice’s transition into a registered role.

Congratulations to Kia and all our colleagues who successfully completed the Occupational Therapy Degree Apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam University. Their hard work, dedication and commitment to patient care is inspiring and we look forward to seeing the continued impact they will make across the Northern Care Alliance. 👏🎓

Today, on International Nurses Day, we want to say thank you to nurses everywhere for the compassion, resilience, and dedication they bring to patients every single day 💙

Meet Akhila Augustin, clinical digital lead nurse, whose journey is a powerful example of where nursing can take you.

From beginning her nursing career in India as an A&E nurse to building a successful career in the UK, Akhila’s story reflects resilience, determination, and passion for patient care.

Since moving to the UK, she has progressed from a Band 5 nurse to deputy manager, clinical change lead nurse, and now clinical digital lead nurse, helping improve patient care through technology and innovation.

Akhila said “what I love most about working at the NCA is the sense of purpose and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s a place where hard work is recognised, growth is supported, and diversity is truly valued. I’ve had the chance to learn, lead, and be part of a team that genuinely cares - not just about patients, but about each other too.”

Nursing is more than a profession, it’s a career full of opportunity, progression, and purpose.
