Did you know that construction careers are on the rise, with over 1.4 million young people considering a future in the industry?

New research shows that interest in construction is growing, with a 4% increase over the past two years. A key factor is the shift in parental support for apprenticeships, which has risen from 29% in 2023 to 66% today. More young people are also choosing apprenticeships over university, with nearly a third (31%) preferring to earn while they learn.

Despite this progress, the construction industry still faces a skills gap, as 20% of the homebuilding workforce is over 50. With demand for new homes increasing, the sector must recruit 30,000 new workers for every 10,000 homes built. High pay is a top priority for job seekers (35%), and many are drawn to construction for its salary potential and job security.

A recent study highlights the top benefits employees are seeking for 2025, with a strong focus on financial support.

The key findings include the following:

1) Increased pension contributions (30%) are the most desired benefit, especially among employees over 55, with 41% of this group requesting higher employer contributions to bolster their retirement savings.

2) Private medical insurance (29%) ranks second, particularly valued by employees aged over 55, as access to healthcare remains a priority amid NHS waiting lists and rising private insurance costs.

3) Employer contributions to home energy costs and discounts/vouchers for high street brands are both sought by 23% of employees, reflecting concerns over rising living costs.

4) Wellbeing allowances (19%) and paid mental health leave (16%) are also in demand, highlighting the importance of mental and physical health support.

Global IT spending is set to reach $5.61 trillion in 2025, a 9.8% increase from 2024, according to Gartner. However, much of this growth will offset price increases rather than expand actual spending, as many IT categories are facing higher-than-expected prices.

IT services and hyperscalers will account for over 70% of the spending, with areas like data centre systems, devices, and software seeing double-digit growth due to generative AI hardware upgrades.

However, while GenAI influences spending, it won't necessarily drive purchases, as the technology still lacks widespread applications to leverage the new hardware.
