Turver Jones Accountancy and Finance recruitment agency

20/05/2026

If you’ve recently been made redundant and haven’t looked for a job in a while, one thing to know… The market feels very different to last time.
I’m speaking to more finance candidates at the moment who haven’t been on the market for 5, 10, even 15 years.

The biggest mistake I’m seeing? Panic.

A Few Things That Will Help
Do
Speak to 2-3 good recruiters, not 10
Be clear on what you actually want before applying
Take time to tailor your CV properly
Ask where your CV is being sent and who to
Don’t
Apply for everything you see in the first week
Let multiple agencies send your CV to the same company
Assume more applications = quicker results
Rush into a role just because it’s the first offer
The best candidates right now aren’t the fastest. They’re the ones who are clear, selective and properly prepared.

One more thing… If confidentiality matters, be careful what you share. You don’t need to tell recruiters where you’ve already got interviews, they don’t need that information and it can cause problems. A good recruiter will understand that. Redundancy is a shock and can be a difficult stressful time. But a rushed job search often creates a second problem.

Take a breath, have a plan. If you want to talk through the market or check your options, my inbox is open 👍🏻

1 year in business today.
Not going to dress it up… it’s been a mix of good, stressful and everything in between.
Wins that remind you why you did it
Days where nothing lands
Constantly spinning plates
But one thing I’ve learned quickly…
people buy into you, not just what you do.
Appreciate everyone who’s supported, worked with me or trusted me so far.
Year two… let’s see where it goes 👍🏻

The jump from Management Accountant to Financial Controller isn’t always about experience.
It’s about exposure.

I speak to a lot of Management Accountants who are technically strong, but get stuck because they “haven’t managed a team” yet.

The truth is, plenty of first time Financial Controllers didn’t either.

What actually matters is whether you’ve already been doing parts of the FC role, even if it’s not in your job title.

Things like:
• Owning month end, start to end
• Producing board level reporting, not just numbers
• Managing cash flow and forecasts
• Challenging budgets and assumptions
• Working directly with MDs and Ops teams
• Improving systems and processes

You don’t need to have managed five people to step up.
You need to show you can think commercially, take ownership and operate beyond your desk.

If you’re waiting for the “perfect” FC role with everything neatly in place, you’ll wait a long time.

Sometimes the step up comes from backing yourself and choosing the right environment, not ticking every box.

If you’re unsure whether you’re ready for that move, happy to talk it through.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard this line. “I don’t think it’s the right move for me, James.”
Then a few months later, I’ll see that same job filled. And the person in it? Thriving.

Sometimes the best moves aren’t the most obvious. They’re the ones that stretch you. The ones that scare you a bit.

I’m not saying jump at everything.

But don’t let comfort dress up as logic.
A role might not tick every box on paper, but it could tick the ones that matter long-term. Growth, development, balance.

Trust your gut, yes. But also listen to the people who’ve seen hundreds of careers play out.

The right job rarely shouts. It usually just taps you on the shoulder quietly.

Funny how no one really notices the finance team… until something goes wrong.
Month end? Quietly done.
Budgets? Sorted.
Payroll? Spot on.
But one late report or a number out of place and everyone suddenly notices.

Had a client say to me last week,
“It’s only when someone leaves you realise how much they actually did.”

Couldn’t agree more. Finance teams are usually the glue holding everything together, just getting on with it while everyone else shouts about sales targets and projects.

So if you work in finance this one’s for you.

And if you manage finance people tell them thanks once in a while (they’ll probably just nod and crack on anyway).

I’m 6 months into running my own business.
When I started Turver Jones, I had no idea what the first half-year would throw at me.
Safe to say… it’s been a rollercoaster (in the best way).
A few things I’ve learned so far:
• Recruitment isn’t just about finding people it’s about properly listening to what
clients really need.
• Managers in the local market genuinely care about building strong teams (and
it’s been a privilege to support them).
• Running a business is both the most exciting and the scariest thing I’ve ever
done.
I just want to say a genuine thank you to the clients and candidates who’ve trusted me
already, without you Turver Jones would still be just an idea scribbled in a notepad.
Here’s to the next 6 months more partnerships, more conversations, and hopefully a
few less grey hairs
