Yesterday the Department of Health and Social Care announced the pay offer to NHS workers.

On first value it looks generous but according to many representative groups it's no where near enough to recognise their work efforts and the current 'cost of living' challenges they face.

MyShifts thinks the DOHSC is not recognising the valuable and essential work that all the social care workers, such as care assistants, domiciliary care workers etc, provide at usually much lower rates of pay.

If you work in the social care market we would love to hear your thoughts on this and how your pay talks have gone recently?

UK jobs marketplace is set to become even more challenging

The population is growing.

Over the next 20 years (2012-2032) the population in England is predicted to grow by 8 million to just over 61 million.

The NHS employs 1.4 million people and social care to 1.6 million people. Together the health and social care sectors employ one in ten of the working population.

As the title suggests the UK jobs marketplace is set to become even more challenging for our sector. The net result of this will be that health and social care workers will begin to ‘pick and choose’ who they want to work for and with, where they want to work, when they want to work and how much they get paid.

This means that employer organisations may continue to struggle to attract new workers to commit to long term employment contracts. Yes the current pressure on all our finances is going to mean pain for a lot of workers especially in generally low paid jobs like our sector. You may think this will force people into working more overtime or dare we say additional hours at their normal hourly rate?

MyShifts think it may have the reverse effect. We think it may make a lot of workers re-evaluate their current work-life balance and look at how they can maximise their income whilst reducing their commitment to long hours and extra shifts.

A lot of workers experienced the pandemic from the side of barrier nursing, ‘closed’ to visitors care homes and generally working behind a big wall of PPE. This meant they saw little of their loved ones, their families and friends. Their social lives suffered – like everyone’s – but for health and social care workers it felt they had to be super strict in their personal lives so as not to impact on their beloved service users/clients/residents/patients etc.

MyShifts believe the workers mind set is shifting. People value their personal lives more because of their experiences and the current pressure on finances. People are beginning to look to services such as MyShifts to be able to guarantee better pay, free benefits and conditions, have freedom to work as and when they need but above all work with people they want to.

So, the future is looking more like employer organisations in the health and social care sector will need to be more agile, more responsive, have various employment models and focused on how they can attract sufficient motivated people to deliver on the aspirations and needs of their services and users.
