Your CV isn’t a biography — it’s a pitch, a sales document, a calling card, a call to action! A hiring manager or recruiter should be excited to call you!

And yet… so many are just a long list of job titles and vague responsibilities that could belong to anyone and bore us to tears.......I said what I said.

If you want to stand out — really stand out — here’s what actually makes a difference:

🔹Start strong with a Personal Statement
This isn’t fluff. It’s your elevator pitch. Who are you? What do you bring to the table? What are you looking for? Make it sharp, confident, and relevant to the job you want — not just a wishy-washy paragraph about being a "hard worker" with "great communication skills." Cold, hard fact, achievements and a strong and compelling explanation as to why you need to be hired.

🔹Don’t just name the company — explain it
Worked at “XYZ Ltd”? Great… but what do they do? 10-person start-up? 5,000-strong multinational? Describe the business, the underneath is where you bullet point your responsibilities and what that meant to the company.

"XYZ Ltd – £20m-turnover FMCG supplier working with Tesco, Asda and Lidl."
Now your role makes sense.

🔹 3. Show me the numbers
Key achievements aren’t “responsible for sales” — they’re:

"Grew client base by 30% in 12 months."
"Reduced staff turnover from 28% to 12%."
"Managed a £1.5m annual budget with zero overspend."
Stats talk. Buzzwords walk.

🔹 4. Tailor. Every. Time.
If you’re using the same CV for every job, you’re already behind. Tweak it to match what the employer is actually looking for. Make their life easy, the more AI takes over and if the ATS is doing the heavy lifting, you need to apply SEO principles to your CV. If you don't hit those keywords, you're out.

Small changes = big impact.

Because when it comes to landing interviews, the truth is:
🚨 A great candidate with a poor CV won’t get seen.
But a good candidate with a great CV? They’ll get the call.

Hiring again for the same role.
It’s not just frustrating — it’s draining, and recently our 12 week guarantee has to activated against a placement. Yes, even I get it wrong sometimes too!

When you’re a small business, every hire matters. It’s not just about plugging a skills gap; it’s about the hours spent onboarding, the trust built (and sometimes broken), and the energy poured into trying to make it work. So when a hire doesn’t work, the ripple effect can feel more like a tidal wave.

I’ve recently had to re-hire for the same position for a client, and while it’s “part of the job” on paper, behind the scenes it’s personal. These are businesses that care. That need people to stick around. That can’t afford to “try again” every four weeks.

So let’s talk about getting it right — starting with the interview.

Here are a few interview tips that actually help:

✅ Look beyond the CV.
Skills can be taught. Attitude, values, and emotional intelligence? Much harder. Ask questions that dig into how they handle setbacks, feedback, and team dynamics.

✅ Be brutally honest about the role.
Sugar-coating the tough parts helps no one. Let candidates tell you if they aren't capable of fitting into your business and culture.

✅ Involve the team.
Let potential hires meet the people they’ll work with, and the best advice I give is always, get the most junior member of the team to also interview with you- they provide a unique perspective.

✅ Ask “why now?”
If someone’s moved around a lot, get curious, don't shut them off Sometimes there’s a great story, sometimes, red flags.

✅ Trust your gut — but back it up.
Use structured interviews alongside instinct. Bias hides in the “I just liked them” space.

Hiring isn’t just a process. It’s a relationship. And when you have to start over, it takes a toll — emotionally and financially. So take the time, ask the right questions, and don’t be afraid to dig deeper.

Let’s stop treating recruitment like speed dating and start treating it like the long game it is. 🚀
