If you’re an overseas nurse hoping to work in the UK, the process of getting registered with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) can feel confusing at first. But the good news is, the pathway is actually very clear once you understand the steps.

Here is the current general route most international nurses follow to get NMC registration:

1. Check your eligibility
First, you create an account with the UK NMC and confirm that your nursing qualification meets their requirements. You’ll submit details about your training, identity, and English language evidence.

2. English language requirement
You usually need proof of English through tests like IELTS or OET (unless you trained in a country or programme that meets NMC exemptions).

3. Computer Based Test (CBT)
This is a theory exam you can take in your home country. It tests your nursing knowledge and understanding of UK practice.

4. Apply for jobs in the UK
Many NHS trusts and care organisations recruit overseas nurses and often support relocation, visa sponsorship, and exam preparation.

5. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
After arriving in the UK, you’ll take the OSCE. This is a practical exam that assesses your clinical skills and communication.

6. Get fully registered
Once you pass the OSCE and complete final checks, you are added to the NMC register and can work fully as a registered nurse in the UK.

The process can take time, but thousands of international nurses successfully complete it every year — and the UK continues to welcome skilled healthcare professionals from around the world.

"Behind every healthcare worker who migrated… is a story you don’t see."
Leaving home.
Leaving family.
Starting again from zero.
Adapting to new systems, new accents, new expectations… all while caring for others.
Many healthcare workers in the UK and across the world are:
Requalifying despite years of experience
Working under pressure and staff shortages
Sending money home while trying to survive rising living costs
Missing milestones with loved ones
Yet, they show up. Every single day.
💬 If you’re a healthcare worker abroad: What’s one thing people don’t understand about your journey?
Let’s talk about it. 👇

For Nurses and Carers Already in the UK

There’s been a lot of discussion about the recent immigration changes, and many people are understandably worried about what it means for those of us already here.

If you are already in the UK working as a nurse or care worker on a Health and Care visa, the most important thing to know is that your current visa is not being cancelled. You can still extend your visa or switch employers as long as you continue to meet the requirements.

For those in care roles, some of the new rules mainly affect new recruitment from overseas, not people who are already here and working.

That said, the system is clearly becoming stricter, so it’s important to:
• Keep your documents and employment records in order
• Make sure your employer remains a licensed sponsor
• Stay informed about any further updates

If you’re a nurse or carer currently working in the UK, how are you feeling about the changes?

Let’s share information and support each other. A lot of people are anxious right now, and hearing from others in the same situation can really help.

Update for Overseas Nurses Planning to Work in the UK 🇬🇧

There have been some changes to UK immigration rules that people in the healthcare sector should be aware of.

• Recruitment of care workers from overseas has been restricted. Employers are now expected to prioritise workers already in the UK before looking abroad.

• Care workers can no longer bring dependants (spouse or children) when coming to the UK on this visa route.

• Salary thresholds for Skilled Worker visas have increased, although nursing roles on the Health and Care Visa still follow NHS pay scales.

The key point for nurses: international recruitment for nurses is still open, especially through the NHS and approved sponsors.

If you're planning to move to the UK as a nurse, it's important to keep up with policy updates and make sure you meet the current requirements before applying.

If you’re already in the process or planning your move, feel free to share your questions or experience in the comments. Let’s help each other stay informed.

Aims to support Oversea Nurses with exam preparation materials, support them and ensure their successful placement in the UK.

How is our journey going. This is just an encouragement. Don’t relent in your pursuit.

We all play different characters in everyone’s stories:
- To some, we’re a blessing; to others, a lesson.
- To some, we’re bright and endearing; to others, loud and annoying.
- Some see us as weak and overly emotional, while others feel safe being vulnerable around us.
- To some, we’re selfish and rude; to others, bold and self-assured.

All of this—the perception of "who we are"—has less to do with our true selves and more to do with the lens others view us through: shaped by their upbringing, beliefs, and experiences.

The truth is, we have no control over how others perceive us, nor should we try to dictate it. What truly matters, in the end, is how we perceive ourselves—how we respect our efforts, values, and continuous self-growth.

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well. I’ve recently been receiving many messages from non-nurses seeking immigration support. At the moment, my focus is solely on supporting nurses. However, I’m excited to share that I plan to expand my services in the coming year to assist a broader range of professionals. Please stay tuned for updates!

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Best regards,
