These are real messages I receive when Mums asks for flexible working.

Flexible working is not a perk for parents!!! It is often the difference between coping and burning out.

If you are wondering whether you can, you don’t know until you ask. I have a free flexible working template in my bio.

I’m asking you!

YES YOU!

The UK government is consulting on how employers deal with flexible working requests, especially when they’re thinking of saying no.

This is YOUR chance to help shape a fairer process based on real life, not assumptions.

Link to the consultation where you can share your views and experiences is in my bio!

⭐️ Do your homework (but be strategic about it)
You don’t need to know everything but you need to know the right things.
Look at what the company actually does, how they make profit, and what problem this role is solving. The more knowledgeable you are, the more this will shine through.
Check recent news, growth plans, or changes that explain why they’re hiring now.

⭐️Re-read your CV like it wasn’t written by you.
Interview nerves often come from forgetting your own story. Read the role and ask yourself:
– Why did I move on?
– What did I do day to day?
– What results can I explain simply?
If it’s on your CV, it’s up for discussion, so make sure you can talk about it confidently. Ensure if you have posted actions/responsibilities on your CV that you have the results to share.

⭐️ Read the job description in depth (read between the lines)
Don’t just skim. Highlight what they repeat, that’s what they care about most. Prepare examples that match those points. Think of more than one question. The more you ask the more you will understand and come across engaged.

⭐️ Prepare questions about flexibility (without apologising)
Flexible working isn’t a “perk”, it’s an essential for parents. If you haven’t already had this conversation, ask how it works in practice:
How do people manage school runs, sick days etc? Can they give real examples?
This is where red flags will become apparent if there is no substance.

⭐️ Prep the logistics so your brain can focus
Know the route. Test the tech. Lay out clothes the night before.Working parents don’t need extra chaos on interview day.
When the practical stuff is handled, you show up calmer, clearer, and more confident.

You don’t need perfect balance to make life work. Work life balance is never perfect.

What helps is being clear about where your attention goes and letting that be enough. The goal isn’t to do everything at once, but to be present where you are, without guilt.

Boundaries aren’t rigid rules, they can just be small decisions you make to protect you.

Do you set boundaries?! If not, start today!

Parents do not need fixing…they need understanding, flexibility and trust!

Returning to work is not about snapping back to who you were before. It is about being supported through one of the biggest transitions of your career.

We need employers to give parents the space to rebuild confidence, set boundaries and be honest about what they need, they do not just return.

I will be hosting more Return to Work Strong Workshops this year, please email me to join our waiting list! 💪

We talk a lot about the motherhood penalty…this is what it actually looks like.

data shows that after having children, mothers see their earnings drop and their careers stall. Not for a few months. For YEARS. It doesn’t stop, the more children you have, the bigger the impact can be.

We are trying to make rigid outdated ways of working fit around childcare, school hours, sleep deprivation and home life!!!

Businesses need to understand that flexibility is not a nice to have. It is vital to keeps mums in work, progressing and earning fairly.

This is why Mother of All Jobs exists. We support mums to find work that fits their lives and to push for workplaces that actually work for parents.

Motherhood should not cost you your career.
