What happens to autonomy when GPS and reliable communication disappear? 🌊🤖

At sea, even staying on course isn’t straightforward. Currents cause robots to drift, satellite communication can be limited and, once you head subsea, GPS is no longer an option.

In the latest episode of Tech Talks: The BotPod, Jonathan Laporte, Head of Software and Product Director at Fugro, talks to Danielle Blake about the challenges that come with building autonomous systems for these environments, and how robots can navigate when many of the tools we rely on above water are no longer available.

It’s an interesting look at just how different autonomy becomes underwater.

RustConf doesn’t have to end when the talks do🦀

On Thursday night, we’re teaming up with Eden and Antithesis to take over the Museum of Illusions Montréal for a private after-hours RustConf Wrap-Up Party.

We’ll have the museum to ourselves for the evening, with food, drinks, a few short talks and plenty of time to catch up with people from the Rust community before Friday’s UnConference.

If you’re heading to RustConf and sticking around on Thursday night, we’d love to see you there. Comment 'RustConf' down below and we will send you all the information.

From embedded systems to quantum computing, the latest Rust LA meetup covered a lot of ground🦀

More than 50 engineers joined us to hear from Guy Marino and Ryan Dougherty, with conversations around Embassy, async Rust and how Q-CTRL is using Rust to power its quantum compiler.

For Rust LA Community Organizer Sean Urbain, one of the highlights was the conversation that followed, with plenty of thoughtful questions from the room and a real look at some of the different ways Rust is being put to work.

A huge thank you to Guy, Ryan, Q-CTRL and everyone who joined us.

What does it really take to build robots that work offshore? 🌊🤖

Jonathan Laporte has spent his career finding out.

He created the DriX uncrewed surface vessel at iXblue and now leads software and product development at Fugro, working on autonomous systems that have to perform when conditions are unpredictable and connectivity can’t be taken for granted.

In this episode of Tech Talks: The BotPod, Jonathan joins Danielle Blake, Senior Consultant, Autonomy & Robotics, to share what years of working at sea have taught him about autonomy, what happens when systems break outside controlled environments, and why those lessons matter across the wider robotics industry.

Take a listen to the episode, you can find it on all of your favourite streaming platforms. The link is in our bio.

“Security has to be the Department of Yes and How, instead of the Department of No.”

That was one of the lines that stuck with us from Session 4 of Rooted in Security: Women Who Build, Break and Lead🔐

AI is already being used throughout organisations, and the conversation quickly moved beyond whether teams should embrace it to how security leaders can put the right guardrails in place without slowing people down.

IAM, emerging threats and the changing role of the CISO came into the discussion too, with plenty of honest opinions and real experiences shared around the room.

After the event, we caught up with Rooted in Security founder Stephanie Zavala to hear what stood out from the evening, the takeaways she thinks security leaders can bring back to their teams, and what’s next for the community.

H1 brought some big leadership moves across the technology businesses we work with.

Our Executive Search team partnered with clients on senior appointments across Lawrence Harvey’s specialist markets, each with a very different brief behind it.

Some businesses were adding leadership as they scaled. Others were strengthening an area that had become critical to their next stage of growth. And in some cases, the person they needed wasn’t someone actively looking for their next move.

That’s where being properly connected to the technology market matters. Knowing who is out there, understanding what will get them interested and making the right introduction at the right time.

We’re proud of what our team delivered in H1, and there’s already plenty happening across H2.

If you’re planning your next senior hire, we’d love to hear what you’re working on. Contact us via the link in our bio.
