Community pharmacy funding is set to increase by 10.3% in 2026/27, taking the total funding budget to £3.636 billion.

The settlement also includes a £200 million increase to the annual margin allowance, alongside plans to introduce independent prescribing through Pharmacy First and the Pharmacy Contraception Service later this year.

However, Community Pharmacy England has stressed that the increase comes amid continued financial and operational pressures across the sector. The organisation has accepted the settlement while pushing for a wider programme of reform to improve the long-term sustainability of community pharmacy.

A Pulse survey of nearly 600 GP practices in England has found that 1 in 3 had to reduce face-to-face appointments as a direct result of the October 2025 online access changes, with GPs warning the system is "not fit for purpose."

Key findings:

🔹 1 in 3 practices reduced face-to-face appointments

🔹 25% say patient safety has been put at risk

🔹 60% of practices have seen GP partners working longer hours

🔹 Practices are losing time equivalent to over 200,000 appointments per week just implementing the changes

NHS England points to rising patient satisfaction and a million more face-to-face appointments in June 2026 compared to last year. But GP leaders say the current model is "unsafe" and "unsustainable" without the workforce and investment to match.

The tension between access, capacity and safe working is one of the defining challenges in primary care right now.

People in England needing immediate care for mental health problems will be able to access specialist walk-in hubs close to their home, the government is promising.

The government said there will be 100 new community mental health centres opened in a variety of locations, from libraries and banks. Some will be set up in new buildings.

They will bring together existing teams of nurses, therapists and support workers.

Many of the hubs are expected to be open seven days a week and some will have short-stay bed facilities.

A letter issued to community pharmacy contractors confirmed the agreed Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework for 2026/27, including a 10.3% funding increase bringing the total to £3.636 billion - covering medicine supply stabilisation, independent prescribing funding, and updates to the Pharmacy Quality Scheme.

The biggest pharmacy funding uplift in years, and a recognition of how central community pharmacy has become to primary care delivery.
