1. Your CV does not show clear results
Listing duties is not enough. Employers scan for impact.
2. You are applying too broadly
If your CV is not tailored, you look like a weak match.
3. Your first 5 lines are not strong
Recruiters decide fast. If the top of your CV is unclear, they move on.

The fix is simple:
- Add 2–3 results with numbers
- Match your CV to the job title
- Rewrite your opening so it is clear what role you are targeting

Digital skills are no longer optional.

You need them to apply for jobs, complete forms, upload documents, communicate by email, and stay safe online.

That’s why GSS is running an NCFE accredited Essential Digital Skills course in May at Canons House, Mitcham (CR4), mainly for learners in Merton.

It’s a practical 3-day course with a practical exam. It’s designed for anyone aged 18+ who wants to build confidence using devices, managing information, communicating digitally, and staying safe online.

Your references might be costing you job offers.

Not because they are “bad”. Because most people handle references at the wrong time, with the wrong people, and give them no context.

Here’s what works.

1) Timing
Do not give references on the first application unless you must.
Share them when you are at final stage or when the employer asks.

Tell your references before the employer contacts them. Always.

2) Who to choose
Pick 2 people who can speak about your work, not just your character:
- Your direct manager or team lead
- A senior colleague who worked closely with you
- A client or supplier you delivered results for (great for self-employed)

Avoid:
- Friends or family
- Someone senior who barely knows your work
- Anyone who might give a vague reference

3) How to brief them in 5 minutes
Send a short message with:
- The job title + company
- 3 key skills the employer cares about
- 2–3 examples you want them to mention
- The dates you worked together
- The best email/number to reach you if they need quick details

One strong reference can confirm you are the safe hire.

A vague reference can create doubt.
