Leading a change you didn’t create? Here are 3 questions every middle leader should ask to keep their team informed and calm.

How do I keep my team informed and calm?
How do I model the attitude I want them to adopt?
How do I bridge the gap between senior strategy and day-to-day work?

You may not have made the decision, but you play a critical role in how your team experiences it. The way you communicate, respond, and show up can either create confidence or increase uncertainty.

Leading a decision you didn’t agree with is a different kind of pressure.

You’re expected to show up with clarity and confidence, while internally you’re still making sense of it yourself.

In this episode of Breaking the Chain, we unpack what really happens when leaders sit in the middle, where leadership wants alignment, your team wants answers, and you’re left holding both.

Because how you show up in these moments doesn’t just communicate the message, it shapes how your team experiences the change.

It’s new… I’ll just hold back.”

It’s why so many ideas never get shared.

People don’t stay quiet because they don’t have ideas…
They stay quiet because they don’t want to be wrong.

And when it doesn’t feel safe to try,
nothing new really happens.

Maybe it’s not about being more creative…
Maybe it’s about feeling safe enough to be.

“I’m not creative, I’m more left-brained.”

We hear this all the time… but it’s actually not true.
The idea that creativity lives in the “right brain” and logic in the “left brain” has been studied for years and there’s no real evidence to support it.Your brain doesn’t work like that.

Creativity and analytical thinking aren’t separate, they work together. So when people say, “I’m not creative,”
it’s usually not about ability…It’s about belief.

And that belief matters because the moment you decide you’re “not creative,” you’re less likely to share ideas, try something new, or think differently.

Maybe the real question is:
Who told you that you weren’t creative in the first place?

But people are still scared to speak up.

Scared to be wrong.Scared to look silly.Scared to say the “wrong” thing.

And then we tell ourselves:
“I’m not creative.”

But that’s not true.

Creativity isn’t just art. It’s how we think, solve, and imagine.

The real shift?
Creating spaces where people feel safe enough to use it.

Technology has changed more than just how we shop , it’s changed how we think and make decisions.

The customer journey is no longer linear, and businesses are having to adapt in real time.

What stood out is that innovation isn’t always about something new.
Sometimes it’s about mindset, staying curious and being willing to rethink how things are done.

🎧 We explore this in our latest episode of Breaking the Chain with Steve Leach.

Middle managers go through a lot… and no one really talks about it.

Trying to execute leadership’s vision
While also supporting their teams
