Being prepared with a few good questions beforehand makes you look like an informed and qualified candidate. However, there are some questions that should be avoided during the first stage of your interview.Â
Avoid "Me" Questions:
These types of questions put yourself in the spotlight while you are interviewing with an employer. They include questions about salary, holidays, work hours per week, and other benefits. You are trying to demonstrate how you will benefit the employer during an interview. Most of the time the benefits you can gain from working with the company should already be listed when you're applying for the job. If not it's better to ask these questions once you've actually been offered a position.Â
Questions with a "yes" or "no" should be avoided:
If your question has a yes, no, or another one-word answer, it's likely you could find the answer by searching their website. Stick to questions that will engage the employer in a dialogue.
Ask Questions About Several Topics:
Make sure to ask questions about multiple topics to demonstrate your curiosity and interest rather than focusing on a single subject. If you only ask about your manager and their style of management, the interviewer may assume you have a problem with authority figures.
Avoid asking anything too personal:
It's good to try and build a rapport with your interviewer, still you should avoid asking questions that are not observable. For example, if you see a certificate on their wall, you can ask if they went to that university. But avoid overly personal questions about the interviewer's family, race, gender, etc.
