Should toys be in the classroom for Early Years and SEN students?

It’s a conversation many educators continue to have and there are valid points on both sides.

Toys and play-based resources can support creativity, communication and problem-solving skills, while also helping students feel more engaged and emotionally supported within the classroom environment. For many SEN learners especially, toys can provide comfort, reduce anxiety and encourage confidence in learning and social interaction.

At the same time, some educators argue that toys may become distracting, lead to off-task behaviour, or create over-reliance if they are not used with clear purpose and structure.

The reality is that balance is key.

When used intentionally, toys can become powerful learning tools that support inclusion, emotional development and meaningful engagement, particularly within Early Years and SEND settings where every child learns differently.
