Often candidates wonder about whether to send a thank you email after they’ve interviewed. We’re here to say it’s ALWAYS a good idea to send a thank you email.

It may seem like just a formality, but interviews are about building a network, and connections within businesses you want to work for; not just to land you a job. There’s lots of templates online with ideas of how to phrase your email – try to make it personal to the vacancy and the recruiter, though.

In this day and age, lots of preliminary interviews are conducted over a digital platform like Zoom. Here’s some of our best tips:

- When your interviewer is talking to you it’s fine to look at your screen, but when answering questions, the best effect comes when looking at your camera.

- Skip the coffee beforehand – it can give you the jitters.

- Prep yourself on industry news, trends and competitors with a quick Google search.

- Make sure you have a stable internet connection and are working undisturbed – it sounds simple, but you can be really thrown off by interruptions, especially at home.

It’s not always the case that you can choose when to be interviewed. But, if you can, there’s a number of things to keep in mind when choosing your interview time.

1. Mondays and first-thing in the morning, your recruiter may be preoccupied with new information that has come in since they were last in-office.
2. Last thing in the day or the week, recruiters may have been given actions to complete before close of business and again may be distracted.
3. Some jobs are filled on a first-come-first-served basis – this is usually detailed in the vacancy details.

With these things in mind, we recommend you book your interview between 10-11:30am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.

However, bear in mind that in the end the interview success is much more contingent on your skills and how well you fit the job, and company culture. Getting a less than ideal time slot will not seriously jeopardise your chances – it just might not help.

Happy job hunting!

Our final part of this series deals with unplanned departures.

If you’ve recently left a role, chances are your interviewer will ask you about it. This is sometimes tricky – but there’s a few rules you should stick to give the right impression.

Try your best to think of the positive aspects of your time in the role – what did you learn? Were there any networking opportunities? Even if you learned what you now need from an employer – that’s valuable.

Building on that, use the experience as a way to demonstrate what you know you need from a job. This can actually underline why you’re a good fit for your new role!

Lastly, if you were fired, don’t avoid the subject. Deal with it calmly and impartially, without too much emotion. This shows your interviewer you are capable of assessing even high-emotion situations with a level head.

The second possible issue that we’re dealing with this week is multiple jobs in a short space of time. Employers may worry that you have performance issues or trouble committing to a single job, especially if the role you are interviewing for requires a significant investment of time or money in order to prepare you fully for the work.

There are a few strategies you can use -

You should emphasise how your wide-ranging experience has accelerated your understanding of leadership styles. You can also talk about how your experience of different work environments has taught you about organisations in general.

Finally, you should also focus more on what you achieved in your role rather than your time spent in it.

This week is the first of a three-part series on common resume red flags and how to deal with them based on a recent Harvard Business Review article. First up – long gaps of unemployment.

If you are currently out of work, think of ways to upskill or some other activity relevant to your chosen career. Try and keep track of the meaningful ways you’ve spent your time for when you are able to work again.
Also, in interviews, you can emphasise that you choose your jobs with care and as such are happy to wait for the right one to show up rather than rush into anything – that the wait was your choice as well as due to the circumstances.

Ingenii has a blog post on free ways to upskill, here: https://www.ingeniiresource.com/article/upskillwithingenii

Another common interview question that you should try to prepare an answer for is why you are looking to leave your current job, or why you left your last job.

The main thing is to try and remain positive. Talk about the reasons why you would like to work with the company you are interviewing for; about why this new position will help you progress in your career and some positive experiences you had at your last job. Being negative about previous employers might make it seem like you didn’t work well with others or that you were part of the problem.

Working from home or searching for a job both involve a lot of unstructured tasks that don’t always have specific deadlines. Nowadays, you have lots of great time management tools at your fingertips, and they can help keep your motivation high and your focus strong.

For example, in your email provider you will have an option to create tasks or add an email as a task to be dealt with on a specific day. You can also set reminders to return or chase-up emails. Use a calendar software that is linked to all your devices and update it regularly.

Note taking apps such as Evernote also have time management features.

Allowing time for breaks can also help you stay on task when you are working, such as the Pomdoro method, available as a plugin for Google Chrome.

We’ve written about various time management techniques in more detail in our upcoming blog post.

One of the best ways of ensuring you will be a good fit for wherever you’re applying is to research the company thoroughly.

Check if they’ve been in the news recently. Look them up on social media and check out their website for a mission statement to see what they’re aiming to achieve. You can check out larger companies on sites like Vault Reports that allow past employees to leave reviews.

You can also check if anyone you know has worked there or is working there, through LinkedIn or other social media sites. This way you can get anecdotal experience of what it’s actually like to work there.

Remember, this is a two-way relationship – you are also vetting the company to see it is the right fit for you.
