'No-one thought about the carers before the pandemic, but afterwards they do. Carers feel more recognised now, which is a good thing - but it shouldn’t take a pandemic to make people realise that.

‘When the pandemic is over, the Government will remember everything, they’ll remember the NHS and all of that - but they won’t remember the carers.'

This Dementia Action Week, we want to ensure we’re recognising and celebrating the amazing professional carers who support people living with dementia up and down the country – like Sumia.

In 2017, Sumia left her job as an admin worker for eBay to become a home-to-home carer – and she’s never looked back.

She was looking for a truly rewarding job, where she could genuinely help people, and she was passionate to learn more.

Sumia’s experience of supporting people affected by dementia became all the more crucial early last year, when her own grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Since then, she’s taken on a Memory Walk and she’s participated in Step Up For Dementia – all to raise money for this vital cause.

We’d like to give a huge 'thank you' to Sumia and all of the carers out there doing such amazing work. If you know of a carer who you think deserves a big thank-you today, tag them in the comments!
