⚠️ UPDATE: EQUINE FLU ⚠️
Following a meeting between several equestrian bodies we would like to remind members of the current situation regarding Equine Influenza in the UK.
Vets are reporting a higher than usual number of cases and so there is an increased risk for both vaccinated and unvaccinated horses. We will continue to communicate with clubs about new outbreaks, but members and grooms should remain vigilant, stay aware of the symptoms, keep checking temperatures, and ensure that vaccinations are up to date.
We have asked clubs to increase passport and vaccination checks, and the HPA will also be carrying out spot checks around the country. Any horse not meeting the HPA’s vaccination requirements will not be permitted to play and must leave the ground immediately.
Warning signs of equine flu include:
❌ An increased temperature
❌ Frequent dry, harsh cough
❌ Nasal discharge, which may start clear and become yellow or green
❌ Loss of appetite or difficulty eating
❌ Lethargy
❌ Swollen or painful glands around the jaw
You can also stay informed about new cases via the Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance (EIDS) website.
