When your ILR clock starts if you move straight to the UK on a qualifying route to settlement

There are a number of qualifying routes, but in this case we’ll look at PBS routes. For example:

- global talent
- skilled worker
- innovator founder

There are often three dates that people think the qualifying period begins from, either

1. Visa approval letter date
2. The date you enter the U.K.
3. The ‘valid from’ date In your approval letter

The correct answer is Number 3.

Your ‘qualifying period’ begins from the ‘valid from’ date within your visa grant letter.

Any gap between this date and your U.K. entry date will count as absences.

🇬🇧 UK Life: His Student Visa became a Liability

Jide arrived in the UK excited.
Offer letter secured. Visa granted. Family proud.

Just about settling in, reality hit - bills, rent, pressure.
He preferred not to miss his shifts at work and began missing lectures.
“One or two won’t matter,” he thought.
Weeks passed.

Attendance records dropped.
Emails from the university were ignored.

Then one morning, an email arrived:
“Your enrolment has been withdrawn due to non-attendance.”

Just like that ooo...

Student status lost
Visa curtailed
Few days to leave the UK

No appeal. No argument.

The Home Office doesn’t count effort - only attendance records.
Some may say he didn’t break the law intentionally.
But he actually underestimated the system.

I'm not in any way berating him but we must learn a lesson here:

A student visa is not just permission to enter the UK - it’s a contract that requires attendance, engagement, and compliance.

Studying abroad isn’t about “surviving”.
It’s about balancing work, study, and rules carefully.

If you’re on a student visa - attend your classes. Protect your status.

Now, what would Jide tell his parents and the girl he quickly married with the hope of bringing her to the UK, soonest.
