UK International Student Update: 5 Major Changes You Need to Know Before Applying
If you’re planning to study in the UK or you’re currently processing your admission, please don’t rely on old information. The UK has introduced several changes that every international student should understand before spending thousands of pounds on tuition, visa fees, and relocation costs.
📌 1. Graduate Route Reduced from 24 Months to 18 Months
One of the biggest changes is the Graduate Route (PSW). From 1 January 2027, students applying for the Graduate Route after completing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree will only get 18 months instead of the current 24 months. PhD graduates will still receive 3 years. This means you’ll have less time to secure sponsorship after graduation. (GOV.UK)
📌 2. Universities Are Under Increased Home Office Scrutiny
Since 1 June 2026, the Home Office has introduced a Red-Amber-Green (RAG) rating system for universities sponsoring international students. Universities with poor compliance records can face sanctions and could even lose their ability to sponsor international students if serious issues arise. Before paying a deposit, always check that your university remains licensed to issue CAS. (GOV.UK)
📌 3. Be Ready for Upfront Accommodation Costs
Many students arrive thinking they will pay rent monthly after moving in. The reality is that some landlords and accommodation providers may ask for several months of rent upfront, especially if you don’t have a UK guarantor. Budget for this before traveling.
📌 4. Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) Is Expensive
The IHS remains one of the biggest costs for international students. It is currently £1,035 per year for most applicants, and this is paid upfront when submitting your visa application. For a two-year course, this can add thousands of pounds to your relocation budget.
📌 5. Dependant Restrictions Remain in Place
Most taught Master’s students can no longer bring dependants to the UK. Only specific research-based programmes and a few exempt categories qualify. If studying with your spouse and children is important to you, confirm your eligibility before accepting an offer.
💡 My Advice
Before paying any university deposit:
✅ Research the university thoroughly
✅ Confirm the school can still sponsor international students
✅ Calculate tuition, visa fees, IHS, accommodation, and living expenses
✅ Understand the Graduate Route timeline
✅ Check whether your course allows dependants
The UK is still a great study destination, but the rules are changing quickly. What worked for students in 2022, 2023, or even 2024 may not work today.
Don’t make decisions based on social media hype alone. Verify everything, ask questions, and plan your finances properly before making the move.
Have you noticed how much the UK study route has changed over the last few years?

A 64-year-old Nigerian man, John Adesoye, has proven that it is never too late to pursue higher education after recently graduating as a nurse.

The father of five has now secured a nursing position at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, the same place where he began working as a healthcare assistant in 2014.

Adesoye said his decision to transition into healthcare was driven by a deep desire to care for others.

He hopes his journey will inspire people of all ages to follow their ambitions and not be limited by time or circumstance.

When your ILR clock starts if you move straight to the UK on a qualifying route to settlement

There are a number of qualifying routes, but in this case we’ll look at PBS routes. For example:

- global talent
- skilled worker
- innovator founder

There are often three dates that people think the qualifying period begins from, either

1. Visa approval letter date
2. The date you enter the U.K.
3. The ‘valid from’ date In your approval letter

The correct answer is Number 3.

Your ‘qualifying period’ begins from the ‘valid from’ date within your visa grant letter.

Any gap between this date and your U.K. entry date will count as absences.
