Bertie & Fred’s, so named after my two late Grandad’s, is a small, cottage business run by me, Kim Sweetland, from my attic work-room at home in Exmouth, Devon.

Having achieved a First Class Honors Degree in Fashion Design in July 2010 as a mature student, it turned out there weren’t actually that many employed fashion design jobs available in Devon. I know! Who would have thought it? Plus, a combined family of 4 children under 11 and a marvellous husband who works away all week (to support said family) kind of leaves you short of manageable employment options.

So here we are…….a one woman show, beavering away in the attic workroom (thanks Dad for converting that one you absolute star/genius of a man you) trying to earn a bit of money towards the household funds by making the things I love and hoping you beautiful people love them too.

I have just undertaken a revamp of the branding for Bertie & Fred’s, to be honest, because I had completely lost my way with it by letting my GAD (general anxiety disorder – ooooh, that sounds fun!) get the better of me in my previous attempts, and being desperate to make things that made money, regardless of whether I enjoyed making them or if they were indicative of me or not. Note to all aspiring small business starters, this either doesn’t work or makes you completely miserable or both.

Note to self: “If I don’t like it/wear it/want it. I ain’t thinking about it/making it/selling it.”

Over the coming weeks I will start slamming this page full of glorious products for you to beautify your life with. I am a bohemian at heart, so all will have this flavour.
