When it comes to public sector recruitment, ensuring candidates meet the highest security standards is crucial. At Venesky Brown, we utilise Disclosure Scotland checks to onboard our candidates and support our clients' safeguarding needs.

But what exactly is a Disclosure Scotland check, and why does it matter?

✅ A government check that provides information about a candidate’s criminal record to assess their suitability for specific roles.

✅ From Basic Disclosures to PVG checks, each level of vetting serves a unique purpose for different roles and industries.

✅ Having a conviction doesn’t automatically disqualify candidates. Employers consider the nature and relevance of the conviction, often conducting risk assessments to make informed decisions.

At Venesky Brown, we’re proud to be registered countersignatories with Disclosure Scotland, allowing us to streamline the application process for our candidates and support them every step of the way.

Get to know our Sales Director, Chris Wallis as he shares a day in the life of his role.

Chris' career journey reflects his adaptability. With 18 years of experience within the public sector, Chris has demonstrated his ability to navigate diverse professional landscapes. In 2019, he joined Venesky Brown, to support the company's appointment to the Scottish Government's frameworks alongside Claire Lorden.

As our Sales Director, his days are filled with meetings—both with existing clients to ensure their needs are met and to explore new opportunities, as well as with potential clients.

Chris plans a week in advance, regularly reviewing job leads with Principal Client Manager, Eyrun Bernhardsdottir to identify sources and opportunities. He also handles tenders, focusing on pricing while others manage the writing.

His role involves a mix of prescriptive tasks and reactive problem-solving. The most significant challenge he faces is "breaking doors down"—finding alternative ways to circumvent processes and identify new contacts who can facilitate introductions.

For Chris, the thrill of winning is the most enjoyable aspect of his job. He advises aspiring sales professionals to enjoy their work: “Don’t pursue something you don’t enjoy," he says.

With six years of experience in IT recruitment, Gerard Lunday has successfully placed hundreds of professionals in roles across the UK. Here are his top CV tips to help you stand out:

Tailor Your CV for Each Job Application: One size doesn't fit all. Customise your CV to match the job description and highlight relevant skills and experiences.

Professional Formatting: A well-organised and visually appealing CV is essential. Ensure a clean and professional format with consistent fonts and bullet points for easy readability.

Keep It Concise: Recruiters often have limited time, so keep your CV concise and to the point. Aim for a maximum of two pages, focusing on the most relevant information.

Highlight Achievements: Instead of listing job duties, emphasise achievements and quantifiable results.

Proof Read Carefully: Spelling and grammar mistakes can make a negative impression. Proof read your CV or ask someone else to review it.

Provide Contact Information: It may seem obvious, but include up-to-date contact information, including email address and phone number.
