If you’re a member of Mamas Bristol CIC: Swaps & Freebies they have people over Bristol who collect surplus food from supermarkets and put it outside their house for anyone to collect

Download the app, called Olio. You can request Tesco and Pret surplus food from “food waste heroes” around you. It is all free. You can setup the distance to 0.3,0.6, 1.3 miles and so on. Up to you how far are you willing to go. Use by items has to be collected the same night. Best before items can be collected next day.

There’s is also an app called “too good to go” and you can pick up free fresh things on there from local supermarkets etc that are near or on use by date.

The Salvation Army offer help with food and there are several in and around Bristol – Bristol Citadel in the city centre, Bristol Easton, Bristol Kingswood, Pill, Staple Hill and Bristol South (based in Knowle West but covers most of South Bristol. They do frozen ready meals freshly prepared on site by chefs as well as tinned/long life food), They all have links with The Salvation Army’s Employment Plus team too which is a free service who can help look at things like benefits, debt advice, training employment advice, well-being, housing issues etc who can meet you in an area convenient for you for a cuppa and a chat to help you.

If you are in Bristol, many of our Children’s Centres have a weekly food delivery, where you can turn up. Its usually some fresh fruit and veg and tins and stuff.

Check out food clubs, there are a few dotted around the city and information can be found here

If you’re near BS16/Mangotsfield area there is a community fridge at barley close school which is open to anyone to collect things Mon to Fri. There’s also a community fridge in keynsham too. There is a community fridge in Timsbury and I think Paulton might still have one.
Community fridges are open and accessible 24/7, no vouchers, no questions, take what you need.
Timsbury community fridge is at South Road Methodist. Church.

If you call your local food bank – even without a voucher – they will give you a food parcel 🙂. You don’t need a voucher to use the foodbank if it’s an emergency. Hillfields Community Hub Friday Food Club – non means tested take as much as you need £3.50 a week

The Foundation for Active Community Engagement (FACE) get ASDA donations on Mondays put outside the front of the building usually from 3pm, put inside again overnight and then back outside again Tuesdays 10am onwards and then topped up Wednesday mornings with anything from Tesco! All donated food which is just past it’s best before date but still good enough to eat! (They just can’t sell it so give it to charities) pop a donation into the bucket if you can but take anything you like

https://www.facebook.com/FoundationforActiveCommunityEngagement/

Morrisons in fishponds have a food bank and have things sorted in to sections. There was a sign saying please ask if you need help so that may be useful

If you are part of bristol city council, there is a form you can fill in and they give you vouchers to spend on food and toiletries. You choose which supermarket (out of the 4 options) and you get a gift card. You can only apply once a year and you don’t have to pay it back. You get it all accepted and received in the same day you apply if you submit it before 12 noon. I’m currently not on any benefits but was struggling this month as my husband lost his job and I was still entitled to it. It’s been a big help.

Christ the servant church stockwood every week day I think it’s between 2-4pm. No voucher or explanation needed

Don’t be embarrassed. More and more people, working and non, are finding themselves in positions where they need help. It’s tough out there right now.

There are Food clubs about Bristol, which I think people have linked to above. For example in Bedminster at the United Reform Church Hall West street Friday 2-4pm you pay £1 to join the club and then £3:50 for a box of fresh, dried and tinned and sometimes frozen foods worth £10-15 . All donated food collected and redistributed by FairShare.

Also if you talk to your GP and ask if they have a Social Prescriber- these are care professionals that exist because GPs know that housing, food, loneliness, anxiety etc impact on health. So they can help you find assistance.

I work for a really special organisation and we offer hot meals on a Friday and Sunday evening out of champion square, which is just outside the Quakers house in town. (It is opposite cabbots)There is no requirement to be homeless, many of our regulars are in housing but don’t have access to food. There is no tickets needed or questions asked. The service is accessed by a variety of people.

We also have a food bank truck that runs at the same times and is full of food items that your family may need.

Please have a look on our page Feed The Homeless Bristol for further details.

LOOKING FOR A PHONE BOX

A few years ago we found out about the emergency food cupboard that they run at the magnificent staple hill community hub.

https://www.facebook.com/1022226044540237/

It's an absolutely wonderful project where anyone can donate non perishable food and anyone, no strings attached, can go along and collect it if they are in need of it.

An incredibly community minded project

However, due to lack of space, they only have one small shelf along one small corridor.

So we tried to find an empty shop/building, which could become a much bigger emergency food cupboard.

Unfortunately, we never found a building that could be used because quite understandably, landlords wanted to get an income from their properties.

Which would have meant we had to pay rent to run the project and therefore finding regular funding etc etc

That's not ideal because we'd really like to build something that's very simple for anyone start up, so it encourages more and more people to get involved.

There is already a project called "community fridge" but we thought it would be good to have an emergency food cupboard which was just non perishable goods as well.

So we had an idea.

Rather than look for one big empty space/shop, look for lots of little empty spaces instead.

Imagine if there wasn't just an emergency food cupboard at staple hill community hub, but that there were hundreds of small emergency food cupboards/shelves all around staple hill, and beyond.

Any shop/building with spare space for a small emergency food shelf could get involved.

All it would need is a sticker/poster in the door/window letting people know that building has an emergency food cupboard in it.

Anyone can then donate to or collect from anywhere with a sticker in their window.

No strings attached.

Then we saw this idea called "The Little Free Pantry"

"Leave what you can. Take what you need"

So maybe we already have a name for the sticker idea and also a second route, by setting up some "Little Free Pantrys" outdoors as well in staple hill?

We'd like to try setting up the first Little Free Pantry in a phone box.

Nobody uses them nowadays with mobile phones etc so they're a great place to start.

However phone boxes seem to be disappearing.

The one outside Gregg's had gone and the one on page road.

Anyone know where there is still a phone box in the staple hill area?

The fantastic thing about the staple hill hubs emergency food cupboard is that there are no forms, no waiting, no stigma and it's open and accessible to anyone who needs it.

Every little helps as they say.

When we ran the staple free food market a few years back, there were so many heartbreaking stories out there of severe struggles just to put food on the table.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a simple way to offer food, the most basic need for human life, to anyone who needs it?

If anyone would like to help us make either of these things happen, whether in a phone box, or have an emergency food shelf indoors or even build a "free little pantry" cupboard outdoors somewhere, friends of page park maybe? please contact us and let's gets started

HOW WILL KIDS ON FREE SCHOOL MEALS BE FED WHEN SCHOOLS CLOSE?

Ok, so it's obvious were close to schools closing so let's get prepared to make sure kids who would usually get free school meals can still eat

Here's my idea.

1. Cook extra food yourself.

2. Post it on this Olio App

3. Start sharing this Olio app widely now.

4. Start a local WhatsApp group in your street to stay connected with all your neighbours, especially any vulnerable or older people who live around you.

5. A WhatsApp group only needs a phone number of the people who want to join the group

We can do this people. 👊❤️

See a list of food/non-food items being saved from waste in Bristol, United Kingdom using the OLIO app

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!

A great big thank you to everyone who took part in the Staple Hill Free Food Market today.

Givers, Takers or Both. You all contributed to help combat food waste.

You also helped some people who are in real desperate need.

It was fantastic.

A real heart warming experience.

A massive thank you to Tree Cafe for donating the use of their space free of charge as well

I now want to get in contact with supermarkets to take some of their waste food for next time. I know they already donate to community fridges.

We had quite a lot of excess food donated today, but it's obvious that we could have helped the supermarkets redistribute food they would otherwise throw away, as well.

If anyone has any contacts in Lidl, Tesco, Aldi etc that'd be great.

The Free Food Market could redistribute any food that wouldn't need storing in a fridge.

Any Fruit and Veg would be amazing.

I would then like to set up a regular , outside, under the clock tower, possibly every Sunday.

If anyone fancies making a banner and some signs, along the lines of "Help Combat Food Waste" "Please Help Yourself"

That'd be great 😊

Thank you all once again, for proving what a great community Staple Hill is 👍💪😎

Help Yourself 👍🙂

Still got this left. Going to be in the park for a while longer yet.

We'll be taking it to Staple Hill Community Hub if it doesn't go.

Been a great day so far.

Definitely a desire for something like this, so we will aim to do it on a regular basis.

Will also be contacting supermarkets in future, to get their excess food that would otherwise be going to waste.

If anyone wants to help, I think it'll be great to have some "help yourself" signs and a banner next time as well.
