I was sat at home minding my own business last night, flipping through Twitter when I got embroiled in a long conversation about pharmacy representative bodies.
We all know there are too many, 160 someone said last night, and we all complain about it, but most of us do nothing.
I have a solution to the problem. All Pharmacists get in a single room with a great big honesty box and we collect £1 each time that one of us tries to deny that we are just in one of the representative bodies for anything other than self interest. Of course we are. Why would we pay the fees if it wasn't for that reason?
Now after collecting a lot of money, eventually and leaving the reluctant ones at the back chuntering about how they are running the organisation for the good of pharmacy and that they'd happily work for nothing to see their fellow pharmacists prosper, we could then make a difference to the profession and we'd come to the conclusion that we only need two representative bodies and a Royal College. One Organisation representing people - pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and one representing businesses. The Royal College would focus on improving standards within pharmacy and promoting professional excellence. The GPhC stands separate to these three bodies as the regulator.
Now the body representing people are free of the business constraints and can really make a difference, the public/government and fellow health professionals would warm to the representative body as people grow relationships with flesh and blood, not bricks and mortar and the body representing businesses could focus on making the businesses viable
NHS contracts could be with businesses for supplying medication and individual pharmacists for delivering clinical services. Can this happen, it can if there's a will but an awful lot of people in representative bodies would have to be really honest with themselves. I hope it can happen but I've always been an optimist!
