Stop Asking for the “Perfect Candidate”.

There is no perfect candidate. A job description with 12 skills, 10 years, industry experience, three languages and every imaginable requirement can kill the search.

✔️Separate must-have, trainable and nice-to-have.

❌If your vacancy has become a shopping list, it may be time to rewrite it.

Are Companies Exploiting Candidates?

Imagine spending hours preparing a business case, a detailed report, or a presentation for a job interview, only to be told the position has been put on hold. Now, I understand that business priorities change and recruitment freezes happen. That's business.

When the process suddenly stops, or candidates are simply ghosted, the damage goes beyond disappointment. It affects your employer brand. People talk. And they remember how you treated them. So, assess candidates, absolutely. Challenge them, of course. But communicate honestly, respect their time, and close the loop if things change. Because recruitment isn't just about choosing the right candidate. It's about how you treat the people you don't hire.

What's your take? Where do you draw the line?

Remote Doesn't Mean Invisible.

Remote and hybrid candidates need communication, visibility and evidence.

Remote work rewards autonomy. But autonomy without visibility can look like absence. Make contribution visible.

The Hidden Cost of a “Good Enough” Hire.

Competent can still be wrong. The visible cost is the fee; the invisible cost can be lost time, momentum and another search. Good recruitment is not about producing the biggest shortlist. It is about reducing the probability of having to start again.

AI Is Changing Recruitment. But Not In The Way Everyone Thinks.

AI is increasingly used in recruitment, from CV screening to interviews and assessment.

The real question is where human judgement belongs. EU guidance treats AI in employment decisions as high-risk, with human oversight, transparency and monitoring. Use it to increase speed and consistency, not outsource accountability.

Candidate question: what role does it actually play in the decision?

Your CV Can Get You Through the Door. It Can't Do the Job.

A CV is evidence, not the product. Employers need to know what changed because you were there: costs reduced, revenue created, incidents handled, products launched, teams scaled or problems solved. In 2026, the question is increasingly: show me what you can actually do.

October Hiring Is Not a Reset. It's a Selection Test.

October often feels like a second January for hiring. But the market is not simply “busy” — it is selective.

Across the EU, the Q2 2026 vacancy rate was 2.0%. Greece was at 1.8%, while Cyprus was at 2.6%.

That tells us something important: opportunity exists, but it is not distributed evenly.

For employers, the question is not “Can we find candidates?”
It is “Can we identify the right people quickly enough — and give them a reason to choose us?”

For candidates, being available is not the same as being competitive. October is a good month to sharpen the proposition on both sides.

A Bigger Salary Isn't Always a Better Move
Hook: €10,000 more can still be the wrong career decision.

Salary matters.

But a bigger number doesn't automatically mean a better move.

Before accepting a higher-paid role, compare:

**Scope:** Is the job actually bigger?

**Stability:** Why is the position open?

**Manager:** Who will you report to?

**Culture:** How does the team operate?

**Trajectory:** Where could the role take you in two years?

A salary increase is easy to measure.

Career value is harder.

Look at both.

The Job Market Can Be Strong and Still Feel Difficult

Strong hiring numbers don't mean every professional feels the market is easy.

This is one of the most important distinctions in recruitment:

**A strong labour market is not the same thing as an easy job market.**

Cyprus reported 13,905 vacancies in Q1 2026, while Greece's labour market has also continued improving.

But people can still struggle to move.

Why?

Because the market is fragmented.

Demand can be strong in one sector and weak in another. Employers can have vacancies while struggling to find the exact skills they want. A candidate can be highly employable and still be poorly matched to the roles currently available.

The headline number matters.

But the detail matters more.

The Interview Is Also Your Interview

Candidates often forget that they're evaluating the employer too.

An interview isn't an audition where only the company gets to ask questions.

You're evaluating them too.

Listen to how they describe:

• Why the role is open
• What success looks like
• Why the previous person left
• How decisions are made
• What the first six months will involve

And pay attention to the questions they don't answer clearly.

A good interview should leave both sides with more clarity.

You're not just trying to get the job.

You're deciding whether you want the job.
