The Value of Self Marketing to Employees

You will remain at the same spot, with the same job and the same wage if you don't pay attention to self marketing

Back in March 2023 while I was in Douala learning principles of scaling a business and marketing my services through impact on employees, I got in contact with a youth with so much experience yet no certificate but a driver's license

Practically not even O-levels

His name Mr Stéphane..

At this point in his life, he was jobless after some series of failed businesses and with a pregnant wife (6months) yet he chose not to give up.

He walked to me and ask, are you a Sc**mar?

I responded: No, why ask?

Mr Stéphane: You are always working on a laptop, a lot of video calls (Zoom and Google meet) and then you practically do not go out to do physical work.

Me: I then pitched myself to him, with focus on results achieved for past clients.

Then Mr Stéphane went on to share his life for the past 10 years with me and his current joblessness

I echoed in my Mind: I said a year back that I won't work with students, nor fresh graduates.

The refreshed thought was due to the fact that "If a graduate hasn't been jobless for at least 6 months then he won't be able to pay 25k for building a complete CV talk less of other of my services (Many often told me: You are a Sc**mer)

Well I decided to work with him and said let me put my services to the test and give him the best.

To cut the story short, I built his complete CV, Cover Letter, Created a LinkedIn profile, Edited and Optimized the LinkedIn

Then I said to him: this is what we will do;

You will go and apply physically to companies here in Douala while I apply online through LinkedIn and he accepted

We together started job hunting, but it took him about 2 weeks to drop 4 applications of which non of the companies called.

On my side, I had applied for over 8 positions of a driver, sales person and delivery person through LinkedIn

3 days later he got his first job which I had prepared him for the interview already with salary of 100k per month

2 weeks later another company called directly for him to come work as a Delivery person with wage of 50k

And 2 months after another Nigerian Fast food company with branches in Cameroon called him and offered to pay 85k with work shift from 12 noon to 6pm

(Read the "how to" process at the end to guide you through)

It's been practically 2 years plus when I started the journey of CV building and have built more than 800 documents and I can testify to the fact that many things are requested in a job description than said.

Let me break down some aspects for you but before then as you read pay attention to the 2 images attached.

Most job descriptions communicate a superficial expression of the intension of the exact employee the company is seeking so if you have to only focus on building your documents with the view of the job descriptions rather than going deep to understand the intentions of the employer then you may be heading for practical stagnation

Nowadays we have a lot people with certificates, licenses, certifications, and all type of paper or electronic pdf document affirmations received from training institutions yet no proof of understanding on how to Leverage the rights awarded to produce practical results in companies.

So due to these, many employers seek to match your Certificates, certifications and licenses to both your application of the knowledge acquired and the results gotten.

*You can't have 5k skills and attract 500k+ monthly salary*

Don't get me wrong actually, if you take an average of 15 skills placed on your CV multiplied 5k now, what will be their worth in accordance to the results you've achieved for companies

Some skills are simply a must have in your industry of specialization so adding valued skills matter

Some months ago, I built CVs for 2 individuals who both applied for 2 separate high profile positions as country directors for 2 international organizations

Few days back, 1 came back to me after being shortlisted then I prepared her for the interview which she made it with outstanding results

Selected to serve as country director with salary between 500k to 1 million XAF per month.

While building the other clients documents, I stated:

*"You have attended a lot of seminars, have a lot of certifications, and so many trainings yet they are so disorganized of which non fits for this position"*

Client shouted: You mean all these 25+ Programs are invalid for this position?

A little secret for you!

Always look at job descriptions in your industry of specialization then you can now seek for seminars, courses and certifications

Practical example here

You are an accountant with 5 years of experience seeking a position which requires skills imagined to have been gained at the 10th year of experience, it will be good for you to deeply read the requirements on the job descriptions seeking 10 years of experience value creators.

Get the skills while in your 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th year as you practice them continually to achieve results for the company you currently serve.

This goes a long way to prepare you for both the position and wage of 10 years experience value creators, we are talking of MD, CEO, COO, CPO, CFO positions.

How to get a job worth 750 to 2 million XAF as wage per month

A must read if you have 5+ years of experience

Overqualified Value Creator

Mainly for the silent generation

Have had the privilege of gaining contacts with high profile value creators either seeking to upgrade their wage levels or actually job searching due to the termination of contract (Expired Contract with company).

Came to understand some key aspects as most who went for the interview we prepared them for were rather termed overqualified.

Well, what did the employer mean by "you are overqualified"?

THE JOB SEEKERS' PREVIOUS SALARY WAS MORE THAN WHAT THE EMPLOYER WAS OFFERING.

Brief conversation at the interview

Job seeker: My previous salary was 700,000 XAF
Employer: We are offering 350,000 XAF for this position
Job seeker: I will still take the salary sir.
Employer: We are sorry we can't take you!

I explained why he couldn't be taken in my coaching session after the interview.

Some key aspects I've noticed with the Silent generation (Employees of ages from 1970 to present) are these:

Most are still using outdated CVs for applications

Most lack a self marketed profile especially on LinkedIn which is for professionals.

Most still believe in sending random CVs on email without customizing them both the CV and email to meet the job descriptions

Most still believe in traditional application systems (Let me explain this particular point in detail)

For you to be searching for a job between 750k to 2 million XAF per month as wage then your strategies have to be different from the person job searching with wage expectations below 400k.

In my book on Job search techniques (https://selar.co/m/Ndangoh), you will get to understand that only 25% of jobs go out on advert while 75% rather circulate in potential networks.

So for you to find yourself in halls where mainly Founders, CEOs, Investors and Business partners of high paying companies are then you've got to sacrifice.

1) Sacrifice your comments on other social media platforms and focus contributing intellectually through LinkedIn

2) Sacrifice your cash and pay to attend Network meetings whereby only Founders and CEOs of companies with the capacity of paying 1 million XAF per month can hire you. Most often these events are advertised mainly on LinkedIn

3) Spend your weekends or special moments to relax and flex only where these CEOs flex and relax too

"Back in 2022, I visited a 5 star hotel and demanded the general manager takes me through the hotel, as we went on he said "the last floor can't be accessed due to the fact that only high paying clients enter there"

Me: What do you mean?

Him: The cost per night there is 1 million XAF.

And as we went on, he showed me a CEO had taken 1 month of rest from his entrepreneurship activities.

See eh, if you really need a job above 750k and think you can really get it without a professionally built, edited and Optimized LinkedIn then think again.

Why do I say so?

As you intentionally network, they will ask this questions;

Who is he/she?

What has he/she achieved for the past years?

How can we get to work with him/her in the near future?

A little exercise for you: Type your name on your search engine then see what appears first: LINKEDIN PROFILE

That's what they see first!

And then ask yourself if you will happily contact yourself for a job worth 1 million XAF per month

Limiting these terms to the career industry

Connection to power or networks of individuals that can position you to opportunities is a vital strategy to your career which highly depends on your ability to deliver the said results.

On the other hand, competence on your career path is being able to deliver beyond the job demand that is to mean delivering value through skills which you have dedicated time to develop.

Well there is a trend that says *"who you know matters or rather that your network will uplift you"*

Maximizing the Right time for Email Job Applications.

Haven done some critical studies on the response rate of employers to employee applications sent by email, you should maximize these active times to increase visibility on documents.

*Applying for jobs by email between or within work hours and days*

What are the work hours?

These hours will actually depend on the company type, location and HR active service hours.

Company Type: E-commerce and Massive Sales companies such as supermarkets will always have HRs on standby to review applications deposited due to the fact that they change employees almost on monthly basis.

Company Location : You take note of time zones before applying.

Considering you are applying for a job in another country then you will consider their active hours and work days too.

Some of those countries may have differing hours such as 10hrs (+ or -) with respect to yours so applying at your odd work hours yet their prime work hours is important.

Human Resource Manager : You have to take note of this, most HR of companies work within a strict and well labeled hour unless there is an urgent need for replacement of an employee or rather still there is an urgent demand for a service.

You will see this high demand for employees carry tags like:

* Employment*

* will be closed immediately upon employee approval*

* of contract often short like between 1 - 6 months*

So to you who takes thy kingdom come before applying for a job, watch out on this!
