CAMEROON – DOUALA 2: DENISE FAMPOU, Enemy of the Republic
In the Douala 2nd District, a scandal of alarming proportions is unfolding, revealing an abuse of power with potentially disastrous consequences for the local economy and development.
Indeed, Mayor Denise Fampou, who in the past personally allocated state-owned land (such as the New Bell bus station market and the Nkoulouloun market) to businessmen, is reportedly preparing to repeat this pattern. This time, she is accused by both traders and her municipal councilors of orchestrating a takeover of a massive area at the Funkel Women’s Market. Over a thousand traders have been forcefully evicted without any justification or alternative solution.
It is understood that the government had already granted land titles to Cameroonian investors who presented a major 20 billion FCFA development project. This initiative not only aimed to restore the traders to their shops but also promised to significantly boost the local economy by directly employing 500 Cameroonians and 2,000 indirectly.
Instead of facilitating this promising growth opportunity, the chief municipal authority of Douala 2nd District seems to have chosen to divert the project for her own personal gain—without the knowledge or consent of the municipal council. According to multiple sources close to the case, this unilateral decision could have catastrophic consequences, leaving more than a thousand Cameroonians out in the cold—just ahead of the new school year and in an already tense pre-electoral context.
This attitude, which conflates public service with private ambition, contributes to a toxic environment in which local governance deteriorates in favor of personal greed. Allegations that Mrs. Fampou acquired a luxurious residence abroad, reportedly valued at 700 million FCFA, cast an even darker shadow over the situation.
Ultimately, this is not just a betrayal of the people of Douala 2nd District—it is a direct attack on the development of Cameroon itself, sacrificed at the altar of illicit enrichment.
