Kiku Corner

Kiku Corner Hello and welcome to Kiku Corner! We are sisters, Meinhilde and Tomiko, who love to cook, craft, decorate, and generally make pretty things.

We are a pair of sisters, Meinhilde and Tomiko, who love to cook, craft, decorate, and generally make pretty things. World travelers who currently reside in Toronto, we both have careers in other fields, but longed for a place to share our creative sides. Why We Chose Kiku

The word ‘kiku’ means ‘chrysanthemum’ in Japanese, and is the Japanese imperial family seal. We are half Japanese-Canadian an

d half German, and the kiku is quite significant in the Japanese side of the family. In the 1920s and 1930s, our great grandparents ran a general store business about four hours north of Vancouver, BC, and owned a small, old, run-down boat named Kiku. As a young man in the 1930s, our Gichan (grandfather) fulfilled every captain’s dream and saved up to buy a new, larger boat for the family business, and he named it Kiku 2. Unfortunately, World War II broke out soon after and even though our grandfather and his siblings were born in Canada, due to their Japanese ancestry, they were stripped of their possessions and shipped to internment camps in the Prairies. The boat Kiku 2 was seized and never recovered. Decades after the war, our great-uncle owned a series of boats which he named Kiku 3, Kiku 4, and so on. The kiku makes an appearance in other family members’ stories as well, so naturally we felt it would be a nod to our family history to include it as part of our name and logo.

If you’ve never tried intarsia, this is a great pattern to try out. For the three-colour version, you just start with two colours and then there are only easy, gradual colour shaping. The pattern also offers an option of just using two colours throughout.

I really like the fluid shapes of the colourwork, however I was slightly disappointed in how the colours meet in the underarm. There is a clear jog where the front meets the back on the right side. I’m sure grading it would be very difficult to ensure a fluid join for all the sizes, but I was nonetheless a bit let down.

I knit this sweater with some fi*****ng weight yarn from my stash. Pizzicato is a fi*****ng-weight yarn that is 80% Bluefaced Leicester and 20% nylon, hand-dyed by indie dyer Sweet Paprika Designs in Montreal. The colours Palestra, Larkspur, and Peacock are beautiful jewel-toned hues, and together they remind me of a Star Trek costume. That’s perfectly fine by me, as I love Star Trek! I call this my Jake Sisko sweater 🖖

Today on the blog: I included the Mooncrush Pullover by Jaq Studio on my 2025 Make Nine list. Although now we’re a quarter of the way through 2026, I did finish this pullover in 2025. Link in bio!

Now that the left sleeve is getting some length, the left side is getting heavy and threatening to fall off the hanger! After working so much texture in the body, the sleeves are really just flying off the needles. I'm working stockinette in the round, decreasing every 5 rounds, and knitting to a full length sleeve. I still don't know if Sleeve Island is a good thing or a bad thing. Here, I'm quite enjoying it!

The pattern includes four sizes, from 0-3 months up to 18 months. It calls for 249 to 373 m of DK weight yarn. This is a great pattern for stash-busting, as it uses such small amounts of yarn. You could also just knit the whole skirt in stripes! I found the instructions to shape the neckline and shoulder straps rather tricky, since you’re wrangling two strands of yarn. I think I was able to figure it out, but a beginner might struggle with it.

The A-Line Dress is an adorable dress with a striped bodice, a-line skirt, and seed stitch neckline and armholes. I used yarn from my stash, Classic Elite Yarns Song in the Snow colourway, and Schulana Merino Cotton 135 in the Pink colourway. The pattern sample is black and white, but I had a magenta yarn that I wanted to use up. Thankfully both yarns are a merino-cotton blend in a DK weight, so they work together beautifully. The resulting fabric is warm enough to wear in cooler weather, but also cool enough to wear in the summer.

The A-Line Dress by Sandi Prosser is from an issue of Knit Simple Magazine. Unfortunately, Knit Simple Magazine ceased publication in 2020. Knitting magazines have been folding at an alarming rate, either closing completely or moving to digital format. Thankfully I have a collection of Knit Simple issues, purchased from my local library.

Today on the blog: an A-Line Dress by Sandi Prosser. It's been a whole year since we last made a blog post, but we haven't stopped making! T and I were finally able to get together and take some photos of this dress that I knit for Kaito. She was in school, so Sayuri is modeling the dress here. I made it out of a merino-cotton blend for easy wearing and washing. Link in bio!
