Respiratory season doesn't build slowly in a congregate setting. One resident, then a wing, then two PSWs off the schedule for a week, and the coverage gap lands on the people who came in that day.

Everyone is calling the same agencies in the same fortnight, which is the part that catches homes out. September is quiet enough to have the conversation properly.

Tell us what your October looks like.

A certificate tells you what someone is qualified to do and stays quiet on what they are already comfortable doing. Which is why the useful thing to send with a staffing request is the floor rather than the title: the setting, and what a difficult shift looks like in your building specifically.

PSW is the credential. Setting is where the experience lives.

Knowing you need help and wanting a stranger in your kitchen are two different problems, and families tend to solve the first one twice.

Start with the smallest part of the day that has got difficult.

Every agency tells you agency work is better. We would rather put the trade-offs on the table and let you pick against the life you actually have.

Both sides on the slides.
Which one would you pick?

Buildings tend to solve an off-hours gap with the tactics that work on a Tuesday, then wonder why it keeps reopening.

If evenings and weekends keep turning over, look at the schedule before you conclude it is the people.

Timetables go back to full this month and the people who covered the summer are moving on, so the postings cluster into about three weeks and then stop.

If you work in developmental support, child and youth work or community support, the thing that gets you seen is telling us the settings you have actually worked in rather than only the credential.

Send us both:

Two residents on the same corridor, a swab back Friday, and by Monday that corridor is closed. Nobody has called in sick, and the building is still short, because your people can no longer move between floors.

That is what makes outbreak planning a workforce question rather than only a clinical one. If one unit shuts down, which shifts can still run? That’s worth knowing.

If you are trying to arrange care for a parent in Ontario, the starting point is Ontario Health at Home. Call 310-2222 and ask for an assessment, which you can do without a referral from her doctor. A coordinator looks at care needs rather than age or income, and what comes back is a care plan that may not match the amount or kind of help your family had in mind. Companionship on its own generally does not count as an assessed need.

Start there anyway. The useful work happens afterwards, in the gap between what is approved and what the household actually runs on.

That gap is where we tend to come in:
