🤝 Strengthening partnerships in Serbia

Claire Harasty, Director for ILO Central and Eastern Europe, met with Serbian constituents to advance key priorities for decent work.

The discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy, Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia (CATUS), United Branch Trade Unions “Nezavisnost” and the Serbian Association of Employers focused on:

✅ Enhancing social dialogue across sectors
✅ Promoting fundamental workers’ rights, with a strong emphasis on occupational safety and health (OSH)
✅ Formalising cooperation through a development cooperation framework agreement and a new Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP)

Together, we’re building a future of work that is safe, fair, and inclusive for all!

🤲ILO Convention No. 190: Safe workplaces are a right!

At the Trade Union School in Struga, North Macedonia, ILO National Project Coordinator Milan Petkovski delivered a powerful lecture on ILO Convention No. 190—the first global treaty affirming every worker’s right to a workplace free from violence and harassment.

💪Trade unions in Montenegro push for stronger role in climate policy 🌱

The Union of Free Trade Unions of Montenegro (UFTUM) convened a consultation meeting today in Podgorica to discuss trade union priorities for and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions

🔥Under the framework of the ILO-GIZ project "Promoting Social Dialogue on Just Transition Issues in North Macedonia and Montenegro", the event brought together representatives from key sectors—including energy (coal mining), construction, agriculture, and tourism—to explore the intersection of climate change, workers’ rights, and decent work.

Participants engaged in a robust dialogue on the implications of climate policies for workers and reviewed UFTUM’s draft position paper developed under the project. Union leaders emphasized the need for stronger involvement of social partners in shaping national climate strategies. One of the key proposals discussed was the inclusion of trade unions in the NDC development process, starting with representation in the National Council for Just Transition.

🚀 Project launch in Serbia: Safer workplaces ahead!

Today we launched the EU-funded project “Promotion of Occupational Safety and Health and Labour Inspection in Serbia” in Belgrade — a joint effort by the ILO, the Serbian Government, and the EU.

🔍 Why it matters:
1. 14,000+ workplace injuries in Serbia last year, including 21 fatalities.
2. Unsafe work costs lives and 4% of global GDP.
3. Strong OSH standards = safer workers + stronger businesses.

📌 What we’re doing:
1️⃣ Legal reform – aligning OSH laws with international and EU standards
2️⃣ Digital tools – building platforms like an e-Registry for injuries and diseases
3️⃣ Training & awareness – empowering inspectors, employers, and workers
Together, we’re building a culture where safety is a right, not a privilege.

✅In Skopje, North Macedonia, the first introductory Steering Committee meeting of the EU-funded Occupational Safety and Health project, hosted at the premises of the Ministry of Economy and Labour took place on the 11th September with the participation of Government members, social partners, International Labour Organization, OSH experts and institutions, the State Labour Inspectorate and the EU Delegation.

The meeting endorsed the project workplan in general, and specifically and in detail for the next 6 months, provided its input into the Inception Report, discussed the Terms of Reference of the Steering Committee and have agreed on the new Launch date of the project, notably the 11th November 2025.
